System Overview

General

The central locking system includes a number of functions. The main unit of the system is the rear electronic module (REM) (4/58). The rear electronic module (REM) communicates with the internal components both via direct connections and the CAN network.

The functions covered are:
- standard locking function
- 2 stage locking function
- deadlocking
- private locking mode
- child safety locks
- unlocking the trunk lid/tailgate
- unlocking the fuel tank filler cover
- indication of the status of the doors and hatches
- automatic locking function
- re-locking.

After the battery has been disconnected the central locking system must be initialized. This can be performed by locking and unlocking once with the key in the driver's door or with the remote control. This is performed to ensure that the status for lock motors and doors is operative.

The locking function on the vehicle at delivery depends on the market and is stored in the vehicle's configuration file, which is stored in the central electronic module (CEM). The configuration can be read via VIDA Vehicle communication.

Standard locking function
The standard locking function unlocks the side doors and the fuel tank filler cover and it activates the lock button on the trunk lid/tailgate so that this can be opened on the S80/S60/XC90. On the V70/XC70 the lock in the tailgate is also unlocked. Total unlocking unlocks all doors and hatches at the same time.

2 stage locking function
This locking function is used almost exclusively on the American market. The function can either be used via key or via remote control. If the vehicle shall be unlocked with a key then the key must be turned counterclockwise twice within 10 seconds so that all doors and hatches are unlocked. The first key turn unlocks the driver's door and the fuel tank filler cover. The second key turn unlocks the other doors and the tailgate/trunk lid. If the vehicle shall be unlocked with the remote control then the unlocking button must be pressed twice within 10 seconds.

Deadlock
The function for deadlocking is optional. Deadlocking means that the inner door handles and the inner lock button are disconnected. This means that a side door cannot be opened from the inside even if a window is broken. Deadlocking is activated 25 seconds after the vehicle is locked. The function can be temporarily disconnected by activating the switch for reduced alarm. The function is not available in the US/CA market.

Valet locking mode
The cargo compartment can be locked in a "private" mode. The function is used to prevent access to the glove compartment and cargo compartment if, for example, the vehicle must be left in a workshop along with personal effects. The function is activated by a switch on the dashboard environment panel for climate control. To activate and deactivate the function a key belonging to the vehicle must be used (a "Master Key") and the ignition must be in position II.

Child-proof locks
The function is only available on the V70, XC70 and XC90. The function for child safety locks disconnects the rear inner door handles and the inner lock button. The switch for the function is located in the dashboard environment panel for climate control.

Unlocking the trunk lid/tailgate

Applicable to the S80/S60: The lock unit in the trunk lid on the S80/S60 actually has no "unlocked" mode. The difference between locked and unlocked mode is whether or not the rear electronic module (REM) activates the lock unit when the switch in the trunk lid is pressed. The trunk lid "locks" and "unlocks" during the normal unlocking procedure. The trunk lid can also be opened separately with a special button on the remote control. The trunk lid can also be opened independently of the central locking system with the key in the lock cylinder on the trunk lid. However, the alarm will be triggered if more than 26 seconds has elapsed since locking the central locking (applies to vehicles with alarm function). The lock unit and switch on the trunk lid are directly connected to the rear electronic module (REM).

Applicable to the V70/XC70/XC90: On the V70/XC70/XC90 the lock unit in the tailgate is unlocked during a normal unlocking procedure. The tailgate can also be unlocked separately with a button on the remote control. The tailgate can also be opened independently of the central locking system with the key in the lock cylinder on the tailgate. The lock cylinder is only on vehicles with a factory-fitted auxiliary rear facing seat. If the tailgate is opened with the key in the lock cylinder then the alarm will be triggered if more than 26 seconds has elapsed since locking the central locking (applies to vehicles with alarm function). The lock unit on the tailgate is directly connected to the rear electronic module (REM).

Unlocking the fuel tank filler cover
As standard the fuel tank filler cover unlocks at the same time as other doors and locks again after 10 minutes or when the vehicle reaches 16 km/h (10 mph).

If the vehicle is equipped with a fuel leakage diagnostics system then a switch for unlocking the fuel tank filler cover is located on the light switch module (LSM). The light switch module (LSM) communicates in serial with the central electronic module (CEM) and transmits the information if the switch has been pressed. The lock motor for the fuel tank filler cover is located on the rear edge of the fuel tank filler cover. The lock motor is directly connected to the rear electronic module (REM).

Contact breakers at doors and hatches.
There are contact breakers in the side door and tailgate/trunk lid lock units which indicate whether the door or tailgate/trunk lid is open or closed, and a contact breaker located at the hood if the vehicle is equipped with alarm.

There are no contact breakers by the fuel tank filler cover. The contact breakers are closed if the door or hatch is closed and then provide a direct ground connection to the rear electronic module (REM).

Automatic locking
The system has a function which can be activated so that the vehicle is locked automatically when it reaches a speed of 7 km/h (5 mph). The function is normally not activated on delivery from the factory, but can be activated afterwards.

Re-locking
The system has a function for relocking. If the car is unlocked using the remote control or key and the side doors or trunk lid/tailgate are not opened within 2 minutes, the car will be locked automatically. This function prevents the car from being left unlocked unintentionally.

Text message for the lock system
The text message window of the driver information module (DIM) displays whether the function for child safety locks, private locking or reduced alarm is activated. Also displayed here is a warning message if a door or hatch is opened when the ignition is switched on.

Acknowledgements
Confirmation can be given by the central locking system when locking or unlocking is performed. The basic setting is one long light signal when locking and two short ones when unlocking.

Remote control
The central locking system can be unlocked using the remote control.
The remote control has buttons for:
- unlocking
- locking
- unlocking the trunk lid/tailgate
- panic function
- local lighting.

Panic function
The panic function activates the vehicle's horn for 25 seconds. The function is used to attract attention in an emergency situation. The panic function can be activated by a button on the remote control.

Unlocking using the key
The central locking can be locked and unlocked with a key via the lock cylinder in the driver's door. This applies whether the setting is standard or 2 stage. During this process the alarm functions can also be activated or deactivated. The alarm function depends on a setting in the vehicle's configuration file which is stored in the central electronic module (CEM). If the customer wishes, the alarm can be set to only be activated and deactivated if the vehicle is locked or unlocked with the remote control.
