Function
Function
General
The lock function which is activated on delivery depends on the market. The central locking system can be configured for standard locking function or 2 stage locking function. For the standard locking function the central locking system can also include the deadlocking function.
Standard locking function
Standard locking function means that all doors and hatches are locked or unlocked simultaneously. The exception is the fuel tank filler cover which is unlocked with unlocking but locked after 10 minutes or when the vehicle reaches a speed of 16 km/h (10 mph). With locking or unlocking a confirmation is normally given via the direction indicators that the central locking has successfully performed the operation. If locking or unlocking did not succeed no confirmation is given. This confirmation also applies to the alarm functions if an alarm is installed in the vehicle. For more information on the alarm system, see Design and Function, alarm.
Locking/unlocking of the vehicle can be performed with:
- the key in the driver's door lock cylinder
- buttons on the remote control
- the central locking switches on the inside of the front side doors.
When using the key:
When locking with the key in the door lock, a hatch or a door can still be open. Doors and locks will be locked and remain locked after being closed. However, the alarm will not be activated if the vehicle has this setting (key set). This setting is made in the vehicle's configuration file which is stored in the central electronic module (CEM).
The switches on the inside of the front side doors are deactivated if the vehicle is locked with a key. To be able to lock the vehicle with the switches all doors must be closed.
When locking with the remote control:
For remote control locking to be possible there must no key belonging to the vehicle in the ignition switch.
When locking, one or more doors or hatches can still be open. The alarm functions will be activated and confirmation given when the last door or hatch is closed. If the function for deadlocking is installed then this will be activated 25 seconds after the last side door is closed. The fuel tank filler cover is locked automatically after 10 minutes.
When locking with central locking switches:
Locking with central locking switches can only take place if all doors are closed. If a door is open when a switch is pressed then the doors will be locked and then immediately unlocked again. The central locking switches are disconnected when the vehicle is locked from the outside, with a key or the remote control.
Normally the vehicle is unlocked by activating the remote control unlocking button. Depending on settings, this can also deactivate the alarm if installed. If the setting for alarm deactivation on key unlocking is not made then the alarm will be triggered if the vehicle is unlocked with a key. The alarm can then be reset by inserting the ignition key into the ignition switch.
2 stage locking function
In principle the 2 stage locking function is used exclusively on the American market. The function means that the front doors can be unlocked in two stages. Locking and unlocking can either take place with a key or remote control. Locking can also take place with the inner central locking switches in the front side doors.
Locking/unlocking with the key:
Locking and unlocking is performed via the lock cylinder in the driver's door. To unlock all doors and hatches the key must be turned counter clockwise twice within 10 seconds. The first key turn unlocks the driver's door and the fuel tank filler cap. The second key turn unlocks the other side doors and tailgate/trunk lid. To lock, the key only needs to be turned clockwise once for all doors and hatches to be locked. The vehicle can be locked with a key even if a door or hatch is open.
Locking/unlocking with remote control:
When unlocking with the remote control, the driver's door and fuel tank filler cover are unlocked with the first press on the remote control. To unlock the other doors and hatches the unlocking button must be pressed once more within 10 seconds. When locking the locking button only needs to be pressed once.
Locking with central locking switches:
Locking can be performed with one of the inner central locking switches on condition that the door where the switch is pressed is open. However, the alarm functions will not be activated if the locking takes place with the switch on the driver's door. The vehicle will be locked when the last door is closed.
Standard locking function with deadlocking
The function in the locking system for locks with deadlocking is the same as in the standard locking system. There is an extra lock motor in the lock units for the deadlocking function. The function of this lock motor is to mechanically disconnect the lock unit in the door from the door handles. The function is normally activated automatically 25 seconds after the vehicle has been locked and the last door closed. This means for example that a side door cannot be opened even if a window is broken.
NOTE: This also means that anybody remaining in the vehicle when it is locked cannot leave. The function can be temporarily disconnected with the switch for reduced alarm which is located on the dashboard environment panel.
Private locking of the cargo compartment
The function for private locking is used to prevent access to the cargo compartment. Private locking is only available on the S80/S60. To activate the function the ignition key must be in position II and the switch for private locking on the dashboard environment panel for climate control pressed in. The ignition key must be one of the customer's keys and belong to the vehicle (a "Master Key"). An LED in the switch indicates that the function is activated and a message is displayed in the text window in the driver information module (DIM). Reset the function in the corresponding way.
Child-proof locks
The function for child safety locks involves an extra lock motor in each rear lock unit. The function is only available for the rear doors. The lock motor disconnects the inner door handle and the lock button on each rear door and this means that the door cannot be opened from the inside. However, the door can still be opened from the outside.
The function is activated with a switch on the dashboard environment panel for climate control when the ignition key is position I or II. The switch has an alternating function which connects or disconnects the function with every other press. The switch for activation has an integral LED to indicate the activated function. A message is also displayed in the text window of the driver information module (DIM).
The child safety lock status is saved as a setting in the rear electronic module (REM) and is also valid after the ignition has been switched off and then on again. In order to deactivate the function the ignition key must be turned to position I or II and the switch on the dashboard environment panel pressed in so that the LED goes out. A message will then be displayed in the text window of the driver information module (DIM). The rear electronic module (REM) receives a signal from the lock units in the rear doors that the lock motor is in the locked position.
If the indication from the lock motors is incorrect or fails to appear, or if activation or deactivation is not successful, then a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated in the rear electronic module (REM). A message will also be displayed in the driver information module (DIM).
Opening the trunk lid/tailgate
The tailgate/trunk lid can be opened in two ways:
- the switch on the tailgate/trunk lid
- the button on the remote control.
As a reserve alternative where appropriate the tailgate/trunk lid can be opened with a key in the lock cylinder on the tailgate/trunk lid.
Applicable to the S80/S60:
The lock unit to the trunk lid and the associated switch are directly connected to the rear electronic module (REM). When the switch is actuated the rear electronic module (REM) checks the status of the lock system and activates the lock unit if opening is to be permitted. The trunk lid is not opened if the speed of the vehicle is higher than 7 km/h (5 mph) or if private locking is activated. The lock unit for trunk lid has no "unlocked" mode. When the lock unit is activated it disengages the catch in the body and the trunk lid can be opened.
When the trunk lid is closed again it is locked. When the trunk lid is to be opened the lock unit is supplied with power for approx. 0.7 seconds. Following which a check is made on whether the trunk lid is open. If this is not the case then a new attempt to open the trunk lid is made. If there is no indication that the trunk lid is open after two attempts then a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is generated in the rear electronic module (REM).
Applicable to the V70/XC70/XC90:
The lock unit in the tailgate is locked and unlocked by the rear electronic module (REM) together with the side doors. The handle on the tailgate is mechanically connected to the lock mechanism. The tailgate can be opened using the button on the remote control even if the rest of the vehicle is locked. In order to open the tailgate the button on the remote control must be pressed twice within 3 seconds.
If the button on the remote control is pressed a message is sent from the remote control. This message is received by the upper electronic module (UEM) which checks that the key belongs to the vehicle. If this is the case then the upper electronic module (UEM) sends a request for lock motor activation to the rear electronic module (REM).
NOTE: If the vehicle has been locked and the tailgate/trunk lid is unlocked using the remote control then the LOCK button on the remote control must be pressed in after the tailgate/trunk lid is closed. This is so that the central locking has locked status and the alarm is activated.
Locking/unlocking the fuel tank filler cover
Locking and unlocking the fuel tank filler cover takes place at different points depending on the configuration of the vehicle.
Standard locking function
The fuel tank filler cover is locked 10 minutes after the vehicle is locked and unlocked at the same time as the other doors and hatches. The exception is if the vehicle is locked with one of the inner lock buttons, when the fuel tank filler cover is locked immediately.
2 stage locking function
The fuel tank filler cover locks automatically after 10 minutes or when the vehicle is locked. The fuel tank filler cover is unlocked together with the driver's door with the first press on the remote control or with the first turn of the key in the lock cylinder in the driver's door.
Automatic locking of the fuel tank filler cover when the vehicle reaches a speed of 7 km/h (5 mph) can be specified as an automatic function with all configurations.
If the vehicle is equipped with the system for automatic fuel leakage detection then the fuel tank filler cover can only be opened with a switch located on the light switch module (LSM). Light switch module (LSM) communicates in serial with the central electronic module (CEM). Central electronic module (CEM) forwards the request to the rear electronic module (REM).
The cover can only be opened if the speed of the vehicle is less than 16 km/h (10 mph). With one press on the switch it can take up to 1.5 seconds before the cover opens. This is so that overpressure in the fuel tank can be equalized before the fuel tank filler cap is removed. This function is only available for the American market.
Indication of the status of the doors, hatches and lock motors
There can be up to three contact breakers in the side door lock units:
- contact breaker which indicates if the door is not closed
- contact breaker to indicate that the central locking motor is in the locked position
- contact breaker for whether the child safety lock motor is in the locked position.
Each contact breaker provides a ground connection on an input to the rear electronic module (REM) when the contact breaker is closed.
Contact breaker for open door indication is used:
- to generate a message on whether a door is opened during the journey
- to indicate to the rear electronic module (REM) whether or not the vehicle is ready for locking (depending on lock configuration)
- to activate and trigger the alarm function if installed in the vehicle.
Contact breaker for central locking motor indication is used to check whether locking or unlocking has been successful or not.
Contact breakers for child safety locks are only available in the rear doors and indicate that the child safety lock is activated.
There is only one contact breaker in the lock unit in the tailgate/trunk lid. This indicates whether the tailgate/trunk lid is open or closed.
The signals are also used to activate the locking and alarm function, for example if locking takes place while a door is still open. If the central locking is locked and a door is open then a light signal will come on, and the alarm will be activated when the last door is closed.
If the vehicle is equipped with an alarm then there is also a contact breaker at the hood. However, this has no role in the central locking system, but the contact breaker is used to trigger the alarm if installed.
Automatic locking when driving
Whether the function for automatic locking is activated or not at delivery depends on the market. If the function is activated then the side doors are locked when the speed exceeds 7 km/h (5 mph). This is on condition that all side doors are closed, the engine is running and the vehicle is moving forwards. The exception is the tailgate/trunk lid which may be open. The rear electronic module (REM) receives information on whether or not the engine is running from the engine control module (ECM).
The indication that the engine is driving the vehicle forward differs between vehicles with automatic or manual transmission. On vehicles with automatic transmission the position of the gear selector is obtained from the transmission control module (TCM). The gear selector must not be in Park (P) or Neutral (N) position for the automatic locking to work. On vehicles with manual transmission the rear electronic module (REM) receives information on the speed of the vehicle from the brake control module (BCM). At the same time the accelerator pedal must be partially actuated for the locking to be performed.
The door can be unlocked again with a normal unlocking procedure
An unlocking procedure activates the function. Example: the vehicle is unlocked, started and driven off. When the vehicle exceeds 7 km/h (5 mph) the side doors not already locked will be locked. If the vehicle then stops and the side doors are unlocked for a passenger to get out, e.g. with one of the central locking switches, then the vehicle will not be automatically locked the next time the vehicle exceeds 7 km/h (5 mph). However, if the passenger getting out opens the door by pulling in the inner door handle or unlocks the door using the lock button then the door will be locked when the vehicle next exceeds 7 km/h (5 mph).
Automatic locking after unlocking
If the vehicle is unlocked with the remote control and no side door or tailgate/trunk lid is opened within 2 minutes then the vehicle will automatically lock again. If the vehicle is unlocked with a key then there will be no re-locking. Whether the function is activated or not at delivery depends on the market.
