A/C - Blows Hot Air From One or Both Sides

NO: 87-50 (superseding 87-50 dated 06-30-05)
DATE: 08-05-05
MODEL: All new S40/V50 (Mostly MY06)
SUBJECT:
Climate unit, blowing hot air when cold air is requested.
REFERENCE: VADIS/VIDA

This Tech-net note supersedes the previous 87-50 dated 6-30-05.
Please update your files.

DESCRIPTION:
Under certain conditions customers may experience hot air coming out of the vents on one side (ECC) or both sides (MCC) when cold air is requested. On other occasions the air distribution will not function correctly resulting in the fan motor running but all flaps closed for a short time (perceived by the customer as increased fan speed/noise level).

These conditions may occur directly after start-up or randomly during a driving cycle.

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

SERVICE METHOD:
The problem is caused by a fault in the MY06 software in the Climate Control Module (CCM).

For affected vehicles that are still in retailer stock, upgrade the cars during CPS or prior to customer delivery following the service method below (step 1 through 5).

For customer complaints with symptoms meeting the above description, perform the following service:

1 Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's).

2) Perform CCM Software upgrade PN 30667207 (if not available, the upgrade has already been done).

3) Calibration of the Climate Control Module.

Attention: after the "Completed" message appears on the screen, allow 30 seconds for the system to check for DTC's!

4) Functional check of the climate system:

5) Check for DTC's

In case of functional problems (see step 4) or DTC's (see step 5), recalibrate the system and repeat step 4 and 5. If the problem persists, continue with normal fault tracing.

Important note:
A small number of earlier cars (MY04.5 and MY05) may also have been upgraded to the MY06 software as the faulty MY06 CCM software was available as a CCM upgrade/reload in VIDA/VADIS from 06/24 to 07/18. Cars that were upgraded/reloaded during that period must be upgraded again to replace the faulty MY06 CCM software.
