AFFECTED VEHICLES:
DESCRIPTION:
Beginning MY 2008, the PAD (Passenger Airbag Disabled) lamp illuminates when the front passenger seat is unoccupied (See Figure 2). Earlier vehicles, within the affected vehicles range shown, that receive a total CAN or SRS reload or upgrade will receive the new logic. Some customers may misinterpret the new logic as a fault.
An actual SRS/OWS faults will always be accompanied by the presence of an SRS DTC and a DIM message stating either "SRS service urgent" or "SRS service required."
When fault tracing SRS/OWS complaints regarding PAD lamp operation, please make sure they are not due to the logic change described.
SERVICE:
There are 2 scenarios where you should inform the customer about the PAD lamp logic change and attach the provided letter to the customer's copy of the repair order upon delivery of the vehicle:
1. If it is determined that the PAD lamp behavior is due to the logic change from a previous SW upgrade;
^ SRS upgrade or reload, including SRS ECU replacement
^ Total CAN reload or upgrade
^ Completion of Service Campaign 167
2. If one of the following are performed:
^ SRS upgrade or reload, including SRS ECU replacement
^ Total CAN reload or upgrade

OWS system: Updated logic for "Passenger Airbag off" light
Dear Volvo Owner,
The OWS is a set of sensor(s) that is part of the front passenger's seat and seat belt monitoring system. The sensors are designed to detect the presence of a properly seated occupant and determine if the passenger's side front airbag should be enabled (may inflate) or disabled (will not inflate).
Recently your vehicle may have received an SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) software upgrade for one of the following reasons:
^ Completion of Campaign 167A
^ SRS control unit replacement.
^ Total CAN upgrade or reload was performed
As of May 2007, SRS Software included a change in the "Passenger Airbag Off" lamp logic when the passenger front seat is unoccupied. With the upgraded SW, the Passenger Airbag Disconnected light will illuminate and stay on to remind you that the passenger's side front airbag is disabled.
Prior to this visit this indicator lamp would illuminate for approximately 10 seconds when the ignition is turned on to confirm that it is functional, and then go out for the remainder of that drive cycle with an unoccupied front passenger seat.
The following are conditions when the OWS will disable (will not inflate) the passenger's side front airbag:
^ The front passenger's seat is unoccupied, or has small/medium objects in the front seat,
^ The system determines that an infant is present in a rear-facing infant seat that is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions,
^ The system determines that a small child is present in a forward-facing child restraint that is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions,
^ The system determines that a small child is present in a booster seat,
^ A front passenger takes his/her weight off of the seat for a period of time,
^ A child or a small person occupies the front passenger's seat.
Volvo recommends that children always be properly restrained in appropriate child restraints in the rear seats.
A child seat should never be used in the front passenger seat of any vehicle with a front passenger airbag - not even if the "Passenger airbag off" symbol near the rear-view mirror is illuminated (on vehicles equipped with Occupant Weight Sensor). If the severity of an accident were to cause the airbag to inflate, this could lead to serious injury or death to a child seated in this position.
We have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with your Volvo. Please keep a copy of this letter with your owners manual.
