Method For Splicing Dash Harness A-Pillar Connector

Service Method for Splicing Dash Harness A-pillar Connector

1. Removal

Note!
The steps for removal in this method may also contain information that applies to installation.

Remove the battery's negative cable, see VIDA: Removal, replacement and installation> Electrical system > Battery and mounting> Battery

2. Driver side

Remove the soundproofing panel, see VIDA: Removal, replacement and installation> Body and interior> Interior> Miscellaneous trim

3. Passenger side

Remove the glove compartment, see VIDA: Removal, replacement and installation> Body and interior> Interior equipment> Interior equipment

4. Remove the A-pillar connector.

5. Removal of the door

With an assistant, carefully lift off the door and put it in a safe place to avoid damage. Be careful in order to not cause any dents, paint nicks, etc.

5. Release the A-pillar grommet

Release both inner and outer flanges on the A-pillar grommet.

Gently pull the harness out of the A-pillar cavity as far as possible.

Remove the electrical tape so that the cable harness is released from the grommet.

To allow the harnesses to be pulled out far enough, it will be necessary to cut the cable tie that attaches the harness to the firewall clips under the carpet. Right side shown above. Left side clip and wire tie location is similar.

6. Remove the grommet so that the connector is released.

Feed the grommet past the harness into the A-pillar cavity to expose as much of the harness bundle as possible. See photo sequence above.

7. Only applies to V50, right side

On the V50, the washer hose to the rear windshield goes through a rubber grommet.

Remove the insulating tape so that the hose can run freely through the rubber grommet.

Use soap solution or similar to lubricate the hose.

8. Splicing of the repair connector into the car harness

The ID tags on the repair connector correspond to the terminal number on the connector. These must be matched to the wires in the original connector position. Example: The repair wire tagged "22" will be spliced to the wire originating from terminal 22 on the original connector

Note:
Not all of the wires in the service harness will be used in all variants. Unused wires shall either be cut off as close to the connector as possible or terminals/wires removed from the connector completely.

CAUTION:
DO NOT CUT THE ENTIRE HARNESS BUNDLE AT ONCE! Cut one cable at a time and splice it with the corresponding wire in the female section of the service cable harness.

Cut the individual wires in the car harness as close as possible to the connector, one at a time. The service harness should remain at the supplied length. Splice each wire from the service harness to the car harness, one at a time. Use the heat gun to shrink the insulation on the splices.

When finished, the repaired harness will be approx. 18 inches longer than the original harness. The excess cable length will be pulled through the A-pillar and stored in the passenger compartment. This is to keep the splices out of the grommet so as not to expose them to movement from the door operation.

It is imperative that the butt splices supplied in the service kit are used, properly crimped and shrunk. Failure to do so may result in repeat repairs.

For general cable splicing, see VIDA:

Cleaning, inspection and adjustment> Electrical system > Cables and fuses cables

9. Secure grommet / Tape harness

Pull the grommet down past the splices and secure it to the connector.

Wrap insulating tape P/N 9511072 around all of the exposed cable harness.

10. Inside the passenger compartment, pull the harness through the A-pillar.

Secure both grommet flanges to the inner and outer walls of the A-pillar.

APPLIES TO C70 ONLY

CAUTION:
water ingress may result in instruction below is not followed.

The inner wall of the A-pillar on C70 has a double wall. The inner flange of the grommet should be fitted to the inboard cutout in the wall.

Make sure that the inner grommet flange is facing in the direction shown when installed.

V50 right side:

On the V50, the washer hose to the rear windshield goes through a rubber grommet. Add insulating tape P/N 9511072 around the hose and grommet (see step 8).

Secure the excess harness length in the connector housing with cable ties.

Photo is of right side passenger compartment. Left side compartment is not equipped with connectors. Store excess harness in the same general area when working on the left side.
