Corrosion on A-pillar connector terminals due to water ingress via grommet into A-pillar (S40 MY04)

DESCRIPTION:

Functional problems related to door functions may occur due to corrosion in the A-pillar connector.

Chassis number range:
S40 000001-044999

SERVICE (S40 MY04 ONLY):

If a corroded A-pillar connector is found, replace both the complete door harness and the A-pillar connector.





Required Tools/Material





9512778 Nozzle kit for Heat Gun

Contains 2 nozzles for 9512850 heat gun.

A = 9512779 35 mm push fit (Leister 107.308)
B = 9512780 10 mm push fit (Leister 107.324)

Removing battery cable





Lower the window approx. 6 in (150 mm) on both front doors.

Remove the battery's negative cable, see VIDA:

Information > Repair> Removal, replacement and installation > 3 Electrical system> 30 General > 300 General > General> Battery, disconnecting

Removing front door





Remove:

- The three screws.

- The connector.

Lift off the door carefully and set it down so that it is not damaged.

Replacing connector in A-pillar





Cut off the wires as close as possible to the terminals in the connector in the A-pillar.

Installing cable harness in A-pillar





Splice in the new water-proof cable harness (the small cable harness is only used for the left door).

Caution!
Make sure that you splice the correct wire, color to color.

Splicing wire, see VIDA: Information> Repair> Removal, replacement and installation > 3 Electrical system> 37 Cables and fuses > Wiring > Joining cables

Cut the different wires at different lengths, to avoid that all splice connections end up in the same place, creating too thick a bunch of wires.

Install the new cable harness in the A-pillar. The 16-pin cable harness must be installed forward in the vehicle.

Removing door panel





Remove the door panel. Pull the door panel straight out. It is secured with 9 clips.

Removing plastic conduit





Remove the two plastic conduits with a bone tool, p/n 9814071.

Removing plastic conduit, continued.





Remove the cable tie (1) that secures the cable harness in the rear hole.

Move the red lock on the cable harness rearward.

Press in the lock (2) and remove the cable harness.

Removing loudspeaker





Drill out the three blind rivets that hold the loudspeaker. Use a 3/16 in (5 mm) drill bit.

Removing cable harness from front door





Remove:

- The four clips (1)

- The cable harness (2)

- The frame from the rubber grommet (3) Remove the rubber grommet in the door and remove the cable harness.

Installing the new cable harness

Install the rubber grommet from inside the door and install the frame on the rubber grommet. Route the new cable harness in the same way as the old one.

Install:

- The four clips.

- The three cable harnesses.

- The cable tie.

- The plastic conduits.

- The loudspeaker with blind rivet, 3 pcs.

Installing door panel





Installing front door

Carefully lift the door into place.

Caution!
Get help from a co-worker to prevent damage to the vehicle.

Install:

- The three screws. Tighten to 18 lb ft (24 Nm).

- The connector.

Caution!
Make sure that the rubber grommet is installed correctly.

Installing battery cable

Install the batteries negative cable, see VIDA:

Information > Repair> Removal, replacement and installation > 3 Electrical system> 30 General > 300 General > General> Battery, disconnecting

Set the clock.

Check functions.
