Recall Campaign 127A:
Front wheel speed sensors, replacing

Background

Under certain circumstances, the wheel speed sensors may send faulty signals to several control units. When this occurs, the functionality of several components, including brakes, engine, transmission and torque distribution may be affected. If this occurs the driver may experience loss of vehicle control. The corrective action will be to replace the front wheel speed sensors with sensors of a modified design.

Front wheel speed sensors, replacing 1

Preparations

Raise the vehicle.

Remove the front wheels.

Note!
The work must be carried out on both sides unless otherwise indicated.

Replacing front wheel sensors, both sides 2

Remove:

- the screw for the sensor

- the cable from the brackets and the clip.

Clean the sensor seat using a soft brush. Blow clean

Replacing front wheel sensors, contd. 3

Tape the connector for the new sensor to the old sensor (in order to use the old sensor as a snake).

Lower the vehicle enough to access the engine bay.

Replacing sensor cable, right-hand side 4

Disconnect the connector for the sensor.

Disconnect the cable duct from the torque rod bracket by carefully prying it off.

Replacing sensor cable, right-hand side, contd. 5

Pull up the sensor cable together with the cable duct so that the new sensor connector can be connected.

Remove the tape and connect the connector. Remove the old sensor cable from the cable duct.

Install the new sensor cable in the cable duct using a new cable tie.

Install the cable duct on the torque rod bracket.

Replacing sensor cable, left-hand side 6

- the screws (1) and then the inlet hose

- the hose clamp (2)

- the connector (3)

- the cable tie for the cable

- remove the turbocharger (TC) control valve from the air cleaner (ACL) housing

- the plastic nut on the wheel arch side

- the air cleaner (AC L) housing.

Replacing sensor cable, left-hand side, contd. 7

Insert a hand under the fuse box. Disconnect the cable from the clips on the brake cable.

Pull up the sensor until the connector for the new cable is up.

Remove the tape and connect the connector. Install the cable in the clips on the brake cable.

Caution!
The yellow markings on the cables must be in the clip.

Raise the vehicle.

Installing the sensor and the cable 8

Install:

- the cable in the clip and the brackets

- the sensor in the wheel spindle. Tighten to 7 ft.lbs. (10 Nm).

Fitting the wheel 9

Ensure that the brake disc and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean. Grease the hub center location dowel for the rim. Use assembly compound 1161397 or equivalent. Install the wheel studs lightly. Tighten crosswise. Tighten to 102 ft.lbs. (140 Nm). Use torque socket 951 2835 if an impact wrench is being used.

Crosswise tightening and torque tightening are important to prevent stresses in the brake disc.

Note! The torque socket is designed for use with a normal pneumatic impact wrench providing a torque of 184-258 ft.lbs. (250-350 Nm).

Lower the vehicle to the floor.

Installing the air cleaner (ACL) housing 10

Install the air cleaner (ACL) housing. Check that the hoses are not trapped under the air cleaner (ACL) housing.

Install:

- the plastic nut on the wheel arch side

- the inlet hose using the hose clamp (2)

- the connector (3)

- the cable using the new cable tie to the air cleaner (ACL) housing

- the turbocharger (TC) control valve on the air cleaner (ACL) housing

- the inlet hose using the screws (1).

Function testing after replacement 11

Read off any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

Switch off the ignition.

Start the engine. Check that the stop (brake) warning lamp does not light.

If the stop (brake) warning lamp lights, the car must not be driven.

Use VADIS and ensure that the system is free of DTCs.

Test driving 12

Drive the car at a speed above 30 mph (50 km/h).

Brake several times on an even, dry road surface from a speed above 30 mph (50 km/h) to stop. At least one braking must activate the ABS function.

Check that the stop (brake) warning lamp does not light.
