Design

General
The infotainment control module (ICM) consists of the following replaceable components:
- display/printed circuit board
- left-hand keypad
- right-hand keypad
- remote controls.
These units can be replaced individually.

Display/printed circuit board




The display shows information about the function which is active. It also displays information when selecting functions and preferences for the infotainment system.
The display is connected via a cable direct to the printed circuit board. They are integrated in the same unit.
There are two display versions, standard and graphic. The standard display has three rows of text and a field with fixed symbols. The graphic display consists of a field with 128*64 pixels.
The printed circuit board has inputs for the display, keypads as well as in and outputs for power supply, ground, the CAN and MOST networks. The processor for the infotainment control module (ICM) is on the printed circuit board. Therefore the printed circuit board contains all the functionality and logic for the infotainment control module (ICM). The printed circuit board also stores the software for the infotainment control module (ICM). The control module must be reprogrammed when replacing the display and/or printed circuit board.
There are diagnostics for the power for the display. There are diagnostics for the printed circuit board.

Left-hand keypad




The left-hand keypad unit is on the left-hand side of the infotainment control module (ICM). The keypad is connected via a cable directly to the printed circuit board. The keypad unit has the following buttons:
- ON/OFF button (POWER)
- buttons for direct access to the CD player and radio
- buttons for searching on the CD player and radio
- numeric buttons for the carphone, CD selection (CD changers only) and preprogrammed radio stations
- a knob for the volume control
- an infrared receiver for remote control.
The buttons are connected in button circuits. When a button is pressed the circuit closes. The infotainment control module (ICM) determines which button is pressed by the voltage level of the input signal from the circuit. The table below outlines which buttons are in the different circuits:





There are diagnostics for the left-hand keypad unit.

Right-hand keypad




The right-hand keypad unit is on the right-hand side of the infotainment control module (ICM). The keypad is connected via a cable directly to the printed circuit board. The keypad unit has the following buttons:
- button for sound control (bass, treble etc)
- button for carphone on/off (only for cars with carphones)
- button for selecting the function, can be programmed by the user
- buttons for the carphone and menu control
- SIM card holder (only for cars with carphones)
- button to open the CD tray
- knob to select the source.
The buttons are connected in button circuits. When a button is pressed the circuit closes. The infotainment control module (ICM) determines which button is pressed by the voltage level of the input signal from the circuit. The table below outlines which buttons are in the different circuits:





The SIM card holder is connected via a directly connected cable to the phone module (PHM). It is not connected to the infotainment control module (ICM). For further information about SIM cards, see Design and Function Phone module (PHM).
There are diagnostics for the right-hand keypad unit.

Remote controls




There are two different remote controls for the infotainment system. One is used for audio, radio and TV remote control. The other is used for remote control of the navigation system. The remote controls can be used to activate most of the functions which can be controlled via the keypad units on the infotainment control module (ICM) and via the buttons on the steering wheel.
The remote controls transmit infrared signals to the receiver unit which is in the left-hand keypad on the infotainment control module (ICM). The signals then go via the directly connected cable to the printed circuit board which controls the selected function.
