Checking Vibration In the Gear Selector Lever

Checking vibration in the gear selector lever

Checking vibration in the gear selector lever
Check for vibration in the gear selector lever during synchronization as follows.
- Test drive the car to determine whether the gear selector lever vibrates when changing from first to second and second to third gears. Especially when the transmission is cold or warm
- Check that there is sufficient damping in the mechanical transmission cable that transfers longitudinal travel (secured directly in the gear selector lever). The grease in the mechanical cable sleeve damps its motion. Check by comparing the friction of both cables. The mechanical transmission cable that transfers longitudinal travel should be significantly stiffer than the mechanical transmission cable for lateral travel (mounted on a lever on the gear selector assembly).
Remedy any faults. Apply SM 4-43-0031 with a heavy lever. If the gear selector lever is too easy to move replace the cables.
If none of the above remedies the problem, and if the problem is serious, replace the transmission.
