Wheel spindle, replacing
Special tools: 999 5259, 999 5045, 951 2050

Removing the wheel spindle
Raise the car.

Remove





- the wheel
- the anti-roll bar link from the spring strut. Use a Torx wrench as a counterhold so that the boot is not damaged
- the ABS sensor. Hang up the sensor using a piece of wire
- The ABS sensor cable from the spring strut.





- the mounting screws for the brake caliper
- Hang the caliper up using a piece of wire.





- the drive shaft screw. Use a screwdriver as a counterhold on the brake disc
- the locating pin holding the brake disc
- the brake disc.

Slacken off the end of the drive shaft in the hub by knocking the drive shaft into the hub approximately 10 - 15 mm. Use a rubber or copper mallet.
- Measure the position of the wheel spindle and spring strut.
- Slacken off both the screws retaining the spring strut in the wheel spindle. Do not remove the screws yet.








- Remove the tie rod end from the wheel spindle.





- Remove both the screws retaining the spring strut in the wheel spindle
- Press out the wheel spindle. At the same time pull the drive shaft from the transmission
- Hang the drive shaft from a hook 999 5045.

Note: Take care not to damage the drive shaft boot.

Remove





- the sealing ring from the drive shaft.

Remove





- the nut on the ball joint.

Note: Use a Torx wrench as a counterhold to prevent damage to the boot.

- wheel spindle.

Installing the wheel spindle
Install





- the wheel spindle on the trailing arm
- a new nut on the ball joint. Tighten.

Note: Use a Torx wrench as a counterhold to prevent damage to the boot.

Note: Make sure that the mating surfaces on the ball joint and link are clean.

Installing the sealing ring

- Note: Check that the sealing ring is not worn or damaged. Replace if necessary. Ensure that the sealing ring is correctly positioned on the drive shaft.








Clean the splines on the drive shaft.
Turn in the wheel spindle and locate the drive shaft in the hub.
Install drive shaft screw and finger-tighten.
Lubricate the screw.





- Loosely install both the screws retaining the spring strut in the wheel spindle. Use new screws and nuts
- the tie rod end onto the wheel spindle. Use a new nut. Tighten to 70 Nm.

Install
- Adjust the position of the wheel spindle and spring strut. Tighten to 105 Nm. Angle-tighten 90°. Use bevel protractor 951 2050
- the anti-roll bar link to the spring strut. Use a new nut. Tighten to 50 Nm. Counterhold with a Torx wrench so that the boot is not damaged
- the ABS sensor cable
- ABS sensor onto the wheel spindle. Tighten the ABS sensor. Tighten to 10 Nm.





Note: Ensure that the sensor seat in the wheel spindle is completely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush.

- the brake disc. Tighten the brake disc locating pin. Tighten to 8 Nm.

Note: Ensure that the brake disc and wheel rim hub mating surfaces are clean.





Tighten the drive shaft screw. Use a screwdriver as a counterhold on the brake disc.





- the brake caliper. Use new screws. Tighten to 100 Nm
- the wheel.
