Preparations
Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Preparations
Remove: (not AWD)
- the cargo compartment carpet
- the seal above the shock absorber mounting on both sides.
Remove the two screws for the spring seat mounting on both sides.
Raise the car.
Note! Lift the sill edges so that the rear axle is free.
Remove:
- the exhaust system from the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) and backward. See Exhaust system, replacing Service and Repair
- the propeller shaft from the viscous coupling.
Disconnecting the components for the final drive
- Disconnect the connector from the control module for Active on Demand Coupling
- Detach the cable harness from the sub-frame.
Removal
Removing the brake caliper
Release the parking brake adjuster. See Handbrake, brake shoes, replacing Service and Repair
Remove (on both sides):
- the wheel
- the ABS sensor and the ABS line from the bracket on the wheel spindle
- the brake caliper mounting screws.
Hang up the ABS line and the brake caliper. Use a piece of wire.
Removing the brake cable for the parking brake
Remove:
- the locating pin for the brake disc
- the brake disc
- the return spring at the expander
- the expander. Lift the brake shoe slightly. Grip the expander. Pull the expander outwards.
Unhook the expander from the metal bracket.
Remove (on both sides):
- the guide sleeve for the cable sleeve. Apply a screwdriver between the guide sleeve lug and wheel arch. Pry apart slightly to remove the sleeve.
- Remove the parking brake cable from the tie rod and the sub-frame on both sides.
Removing the rear axle
- Remove the plastic nut for the fender liner. Bend the fender liner out of the way
- Drill out the heat deflector plate rivet on the sub-frame left rear bushing.
Does not apply to AWD:
- Remove the two screws for the spring seat mounting on both sides.
Position a lifting table under the rear suspension.
Remove:
- the four sub-frame mountings
- the sub-frame brackets screws
- the brake hose mounting stays from mountings on the brackets
- the brake pipes from the plastic clips
- the mounting for the fuel filter on the right bracket.
Carefully lower the rear suspension approximately 50 mm.
Remove:
- the three hoses on the EVAP canister.
Applies only to All-wheel drive (AWD):
- Remove the shock absorber from the link arm on both sides.
Applies to all models:
- Lower the sub-frame fully.
Removing the wheel spindle
Remove:
- the screw for the control arm outer mounting
- the screw for the outer mounting for the lower control arm
- the screw for the rear mounting for the lateral link
- the screw for the outer mounting for the tie rod
- the screw for the outer mounting drive shaft.
- Press off the wheel spindle. Use tool 951 2923 Hydraulic hole cylinder 951 2923 Hydraulic Hole Cylinder with 999 7054 Adapter incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 999 7054 Adapter Incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 , 999 7031 Locating pin 999 7031 Locating Pin and 999 7031 Locating pin 999 7031 Locating Pin together with threaded rod 999 7039 Connecting rod M16X360 999 7039 Connecting Rod M16X360.
Note! Only press until the bushing releases from the splined area.
Remove the wheel spindle.
Removing the upper front control arm bushing
- Use tool: 951 2923 Hydraulic hole cylinder 951 2923 Hydraulic Hole Cylinder with 999 7054 Adapter incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 999 7054 Adapter Incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 , 999 7032 Sleeve 999 7032 Sleeve and 999 7033 Sleeve 999 7033 Sleeve
- Remove the screws for the inner control arm mountings (x2)
- Install the hydraulic cylinder and pull out the front bushing using the control arm.
Note! Threaded rod 999 7034 Connecting rod M12X400 999 7034 Connecting Rod M12X400 mounted in the control arm mounting thread.
Remove:
- the hydraulic cylinder
- the control arm.
Removing the upper rear control arm bushing
- Use tool: 951 2923 Hydraulic hole cylinder 951 2923 Hydraulic Hole Cylinder with 999 7054 Adapter incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 999 7054 Adapter Incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 , 999 7035 Sleeve 999 7035 Sleeve and 999 7036 Drift 999 7036 Drift
- Install the hydraulic cylinder.
Note! Use threaded rod 999 7037 Connecting rod M14X400 999 7037 Connecting Rod M14X400.
- Pull the bushing out.
Installation
Note! To ensure that there is no exhaust leakage, see: Flanged joint, assembling Flanged Joint, Assembling.
Installing the upper rear control arm bushing
- Use tool: 951 2923 Hydraulic hole cylinder 951 2923 Hydraulic Hole Cylinder with 999 7054 Adapter incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 999 7054 Adapter Incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 , 999 7035 Sleeve 999 7035 Sleeve , 999 7038 Drift 999 7038 Drift and 999 7036 Drift 999 7036 Drift
- Install the hydraulic cylinder. Use threaded rod 999 7039 Connecting rod M16X360 999 7039 Connecting Rod M16X360.
Hint: Lubricate the end of the bushing using petroleum jelly.
- Pull the bushing.
Hint: When the bushing is completely in the guide sleeve, release slightly and break off the sleeve. It is now possible to see if the bushing has been pulled in too far.
Installing the upper front control arm bushing
- Use tool 951 2923 Hydraulic hole cylinder 951 2923 Hydraulic Hole Cylinder with 999 7054 Adapter incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 999 7054 Adapter Incl. 2x MC6C M6X12 , 999 7035 Sleeve 999 7035 Sleeve and 999 7040 Drift 999 7040 Drift
- Thread the control arm in
- Press the bushing onto the end of the control arm. Install the counterhold in the control arm mounting thread
- Use screw 999 7041 Screw MC6S M12X70 999 7041 Screw MC6S M12X70
- Install the hydraulic cylinder using thread rod 999 7034 Connecting rod M12X400 999 7034 Connecting Rod M12X400 in the other mounting thread for the control arm
- Tighten the bushing.
Note! Ensure that the bushing is in the correct position.
Installing screw
- Install the screws for the control mountings.
Note! Do not tighten the screw for the bushing mountings. This is carried out later when the rear suspension is in the normal position.
Installing the wheel spindle
Install:
- the wheel spindle
- the screw for the outer mounting drive shaft. Use a new screw. Tighten to 50 Nm
- the screw for the outer mounting for the tie rod
- the screw for the rear mounting for the lateral link
- the screw for the outer mounting for the lower control arm
- the screw for the outer mounting for the upper control arm.
Note! Do not tighten the screw for the bushing mountings. This is carried out later when the rear suspension is in the normal position.
Installing the rear axle
- Raise the rear suspension 50 mm to the installation position
- Install the three hoses on the EVAP canister
- Carefully raise the rear suspension.
Does not apply to AWD:
Install the two screws for the spring seat mounting. Tighten to 50 Nm.
Warning! Always check that the car does not lift from the lifting arms of the car lift when working with the lifting table.
Note! Do not tighten the screw for the bushing mountings. This is carried out later when the rear suspension is in the normal position.
Note! Guide in the propeller shaft when lifting operation.
Note! Ensure that the brake pipes or cable harnesses are not trapped.
Installing the rear axle (continued)
- Slide up the centering sleeves 999 7017 Socket set rear axle 999 7017 Socket Set Rear Axle in the two rear mountings on the sub-frame
- Install the screw. Tighten lightly
- Install the screws for the front mountings on the sub-frame. Install the screws through the brackets
- Tighten all the front mountings. Tighten to 80 Nm
- Remove the screws for the rear mountings on the sub-frame. Remove the centering sleeves
- Install the screws for the rear mountings on the sub-frame. Tighten to 80 Nm.
Install:
- the brake pipes in the plastic clips on the brackets
- the screw for the fuel filter bracket (24Nm)
- the screw for the brake line mounting stays (24 Nm).
Remove the lifting table.
Install:
- the brake pipes in the plastic clips on the brackets
- the screw for the fuel filter bracket. Tighten to 24 Nm
- the screw for the mounting stay for the brake lines. Tighten to 24 Nm.
Remove the lifting table.
Install:
- rivets to the heat shield on the sub-frame left rear bushing
- the plastic nut for the fender liner.
Installing the brake cable for the parking brake
- Install the mounting for the cables on the sub-frame and the clips on the tie rods
- Thread the mechanical cables into the brake covers.
Hint: Lubricate the O-rings on the guide sleeves of the mechanical cables. Use silicone grease.
Note! Ensure that the guide sleeve lug is correctly positioned in the cover.
Hook the expander in the plate bracket.
Install:
- the expander
- the return spring
- the brake disc
- the brake disc locating pin. Tighten to 10 Nm.
Installing the brake caliper
Install:
- the brake caliper
- the brake caliper mounting screw. Tighten to 60 Nm. Use new screws
- the ABS sensor
- the screws. Tighten to 10 Nm
- the ABS sensor cable in the bracket
- the wheels.
Finishing
Finishing (not AWD)
Install tensioner and tension the rear suspension to the normal position. See Tensioner, instructions for use, M66, TF-80SC, AW55-50/51SN, M56 Tensioner, Instructions For Use.
Tighten:
- the outer mounting for the tie rod. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the rear mounting for the lateral link. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the outer mounting for the lower control arm. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the outer mounting for the upper control arm. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the inner mounting for the upper control arm. Tighten to 80 Nm.
Finishing work (AWD)
Press the suspension up to its normal position, see Normal position Normal Position.
Tighten:
- the outer mounting for the tie rod. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the rear mounting for the lateral link. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the outer mounting for the lower control arm. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the outer mounting for the upper control arm. Tighten to 80 Nm
- the inner mounting for the upper control arm. Tighten to 80 Nm.
Install the retaining strap and pull down the control arms so that the shock absorber can be installed.
Install:
- the shock absorber
- the screws. Tighten to 80 Nm.
Remove the tensioner strap.
Finishing work (continued)
Adjust the parking brake. See Handbrake, brake shoes, replacing Service and Repair.
Install:
- the exhaust system. See Exhaust system, replacing Service and Repair
- the wheels.
Finishing work (continued)
Applies only to All-wheel drive (AWD)
- Install the propeller shaft in the viscous coupling alternatively.
Applies only to cars with Active on Demand Coupling:
Install:
- the cable harness in the clips on the sub-frame
- the Active on Demand Coupling connector.
Does not apply to AWD:
Install:
- the two screws for the spring seat mounting. Tighten to 24 Nm
- the cargo compartment carpet.
All cars:
Carry out wheel alignment.
Check/adjust the wheel alignment. See: Wheel alignment, checking / adjusting Service and Repair.
