Control module
The main task of the phone module (PHM) is to manage the following functions:
- Voice calls
- Automatic connection to the Service Centre in the event of a collision or alarm (Volvo On Call Plus)
- Connection to the Service Centre for other services when the SOS or ON CALL button is pressed (Volvo On Call Plus).
Carphone and data communication is via AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System).
The phone module (PHM) is integrated in the keypad, which is beside the audio module (AUM) in the centre console. If the phone module (PHM) is replaced, the keypad must also be replaced.
A phone module (PHM) with Volvo On Call Plus functionality can not be installed as an aftermarket option.
The phone module (PHM) is directly connected to the components and to the other control modules via the Controller Area Network (CAN).
The control module checks activations and input and output signals via an integrated diagnostic system. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the control module detects an error. In certain cases the control module replaces the faulty signal with a substitute value.
With phone modules (PHM) with Volvo On Call Plus functionality, the driver will also be notified via a message in the driver information module (DIM) if a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored.
Any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored in the control module memory. This information can be read off using VIDA via the data link connector (DLC) in the vehicle.
The driver will also be notified that a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been stored by a text message displayed in the driver information module (DIM).
An easy way to check that the phone module (PHM) is powered and grounded is to switch on the carphone. Press the ON/OFF button and then the YES button to access the carphone menu. The LED in the ON/OFF button should then be on and a text message displayed in the driver information module (DIM).
Carphones with Volvo On Call Plus
An initiated Volvo On Call Plus service is always assigned higher priority than a standard private call. It will not be possible to make normal calls, and ongoing calls will be interrupted, while the Volvo On Call function is active.
The phone module (PHM) with Volvo On Call Plus function has a built-in reserve battery. The reserve battery ensures that the control module is powered in the event of a collision or alarm when there is no battery power. The remaining reserve battery capacity is calculated by the control module. When replacing the battery, the power level must be reset to the full value. This is done using VIDA. When the calculated capacity has dropped to 30% of full capacity, a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored.
The phone module (PHM) has two different subscriptions, the customer's own and a specific subscription to Volvo On Call Plus. This subscription is only connected to the Service Centre which handles On Call Plus services. All customer data and codes for this subscription are processed via a website. The following changes can be made to the status of the subscription:
- activation/re-activation
- deactivation
- extension of the subscription.
The procedures are described in VIDA under: Information / Repair and installation / removal, replacement and installation / 39 Media, communication and navigation / Communications radio, mobile telephone.
Phone modules (PHM) with Volvo On Call Plus function have an integrated GPS receiver which establishes the position of the car. The GPS aerial is in the same unit as the carphone aerial.
Phone modules (PHM) with Volvo On Call Plus function have an integrated reserve aerial. This is in the control module. The reserve aerial is only used in the event of a collision or alarm if the regular aerial is not working.

Signals
The following table summarizes the input signals to and output signals from the phone module (PHM). The signal types are divided into directly connected signals and Controller area network (CAN) communication. The following illustration displays the same information with the Volvo component designations.
