Phone Module (PHM)

Downloading software and replacing the control module
New software can be downloaded into the phone module (PHM). When ordering software, the hardware and the software in the car is compared to the data in the Volvo central database. If the comparison is OK the software is downloaded to the control module.
For phone modules (PHM) with Volvo On Call Plus functionality, the unique PIN code is supplied with the software. When replacing the phone module (PHM), the PIN code is retrieved from the Volvo Central Database. The PIN code is sent with the software package. A new phone module (PHM) has a generally known PIN code. This PIN code is used to unlock the control module so that functions can be programmed and parameters can be read out. VIDA automatically unlocks the control module.
After software is downloaded, the parameters are sent to the Volvo central database. Information about changes to the customer data for Volvo On Call Plus is then sent from the Volvo central database to the web portal which manages data for Volvo On Call Plus. The data is also sent to the Volvo On Call Plus Service Center via ftp (File Transfer Protocol).
The following functions and data are programmed via a software download:
- The car VIN number
- The unique PIN code.
The following parameters are read off and transmitted to the Volvo central database:
- The ESN (Electronic Serial Number) of the AMPS unit
- The unique PIN code
- The version number of the software for the AMPS unit
- The type of unit.
If the comparison between the car and Volvo central database does not match, the database is updated with the relevant configuration. When this is complete the software and PINs are downloaded.
After downloading the software, the GPS receiver will search for GPS satellites for 20 minutes to determine the position of the car. During this time, the car must be parked outside with no large obstacles which could prevent the GPS receiver from establishing contact with the GPS satellites obscuring it. If the GPS receiver is unable to establish a position within the allocated time, the search for GPS satellites will stop. Volvo On Call Plus functionality switches to deactivated. After a GPS receiver has determined the position of the car, the ON CALL button must be held in for at least two seconds to connect a voice call to the Volvo On Call Plus Service Center. This call is made to confirm the new vehicle data and to check that Volvo On Call Plus is functioning correctly.
The phone module (PHM) is integrated in the keypad, which is beside the audio module (AUM) in the center console. If the phone module (PHM) is replaced, the keypad must also be replaced. Because of the unique PIN code and the Volvo On Call Plus subscription, the phone module (PHM) cannot be moved between cars.
If the phone module (PHM) is replaced, the customer's private and Volvo On Call subscriptions must be programmed. This is done using the carphone keypad. Instructions and codes for this are on the Volvo On Call Plus website. If necessary, for example if Volvo On Call Plus is being misused, the network operator is also able to cancel the subscription for the internal SIM card for Volvo On Call Plus. After the Volvo On Call Plus function has been activated, the procedures are the same as for when replacing the control module in terms of:
- searching for GPS satellites and
- connecting voice calls to the Volvo On Call Plus Service Center.
If the Volvo On Call Plus function is activated, a text message will indicate this to the user. The text message is displayed in the driver information module (DIM) at the start of each operating cycle (key position I).
If the customer so desires, the phone module (PHM) can be removed. The software package containing the car configuration file and PIN code must then be ordered. The PIN code is used to unlock the control module so that the Volvo On Call Plus function can be deactivated and the PIN code can be reset to the original general code.
