Steering shaft, lower, replacing

Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Removal

Removing wheels
Remove the wheel on the driver's side.

Removing the screw on the lower steering shaft




Remove the screw on the lower steering shaft on the driver's side wheel housing. Use the tool depicted in the illustration.

Disassembling the lower steering shaft




Set the wheels to straight ahead. Lock the steering wheel lock
Remove the upper screw on the lower steering shaft
Expose the lower steering shaft from the upper steering shaft
Press the upper steering shaft up slightly for better access.

Removing the lower steering shaft




Fold back the floor carpet
Bend up the outer section of the steering shaft boot

Remove:
- the lock ring around the boot
- the boot
- the lower steering shaft.

Installation

Installing the lower steering shaft




Clean the steering gear pinion from any rust and lubricate.

Install:
- the lower steering shaft
- the screw of the lower steering shaft from within the vehicle.

Note! Ensure that the screw is seated in its groove on the steering gear. Use a new screw. Finger tighten.

Installing the needle bearing




Ensure that the needle bearing in the boot is in the groove. Lubricate the needle bearing in the boot with low temperature grease

Note! If necessary, make sure that the plain bearing is properly seated. Lubricate the plain bearing in the boot with low temperature grease, part no. 1161427-8 (6 grams).

Lubricate the edge on the inside of the inner part of the gaiter with soapy water.

Installing the snap ring




Install the snap ring on the boot as illustrated.

Installing the boot




Thread the boot over the lower steering shaft. Press the boot over the flange of the panel
Start by pressing the boot from the bottom upwards

Note! Ensure that the boot seals round the panel flange.

Installing the snap ring




Install the snap ring around the boot. Bend back the outer section of the boot
Fold back the carpet.

Assembling the upper and lower steering shaft




Pull the upper steering shaft down. Assemble the upper steering shaft with the lower steering shaft
Install the screw and nut. Tighten to 30 Nm

Note! Use a new screw and nut.

Tightening the lower screw on the lower steering shaft
Expose the steering wheel lock. Turn the steering wheel so that the screw on the lower steering shaft points straight forward
Tighten the lower screw on the lower steering shaft in the engine compartment. Tighten to 25 Nm.

Fitting the wheel
Remount the wheel. See Installing wheels Service and Repair.
