Outer Constant Velocity Joint Housing With Boot, Replacing
Outer constant velocity joint housing with boot, replacingRemoving the outer boot
Secure the drive shaft in a vise with soft jaws.
Remove the clamps from the boots. Cut the boot and remove it from the drive shaft.
Checking dimensions
Wipe off the grease from the constant velocity joint housing.
Measure the distance from the inner ring to the inner groove on the drive shaft. Note the measurement.
Removing the outer constant velocity joint housing
Tap off the constant velocity joint housing using 9997176.
Note: Only tap the inner ring. Take care not to damage the bearing race or outer ring.
Cleaning / checking the outer constant velocity joint housing
The constant velocity joint housing must be cleaned and checked if damage is suspected.
Note: If there is no visible sign of wear on the constant velocity joint housing, it can be cleaned when assembled and blown clean before greasing.
Installing boot and drive shafts
Before installing the boot, see: Installation preparations.
Install the drive shafts. See: Drive shaft left, replacing and Drive shaft right, replacing
Components on the outer constant velocity joint housing, replacing Removing the outer ring, bearing race and inner ring of the outer constant velocity joint housing
Mark components in relation to each other. Use an electric scriber.
Removing the balls
Turn the inner ring and bearing race of the constant velocity joint housing. Remove the ball bearings clockwise one by one.
Use the marking as the starting point when removing.
Place the ball bearings in order so that they can be reinstalled in the same positions.
Removing the bearing race and inner ring from the shaft
Turn the inner ring 90 degrees in relation to the bearing race.
Remove the inner ring.
Cleaning the components on the outer constant velocity joint housing
Clean the components of the outer constant velocity joint housing thoroughly.
Note: Replace the drive shaft assembly if any component has cracking or wear damage. Scratches and minor pitting of the bearing races are permitted.
Installing the inner ring in the bearing race
Install the inner ring in the bearing race.
Line up the markings with each other. Install a ball bearing.
Note: Take care when installing the inner ball bearings.
Turn the inner ring and the bearing race. Install the ball bearings one by one in the same positions as before.
Installing boot and drive shafts
Before installing the boot, see: Installation preparations. Install the drive shafts.
