SUBJECT:
Service Campaign 147A Inspecting and Greasing A-Pillar Cable Harness
connector.
REFERENCE: SMB 37-147A PMB 37-147A VADIS VIDA
DESCRIPTION:
In certain model year 2004.5 S40 and 2005 S40 and V50 vehicles, water may enter the door harness, causing the harness to corrode. An electrical problem related to door function may occur due to corrosion in the A-pillar connector.
It is estimated that less then 3% of the vehicles will be found to have corrosion in this area.
SERVICE:
The corrective action will be to grease the harness connections. In some cases, if corrosion is found, the cable harness will be required to be replaced.
Follow the instructions below.
1.
Checking functions
Check all functions in the front doors'
electrical system.
2.
Removing the battery's negative cable
Lower the window approx. 150 mm on both
front doors.
Removing the battery's negative cable, see:
Repair and installation
Section Battery and installation parts
3.
Removing front door
Remove:
- the three screws
- the connector.
Lift off the door carefully and set it down so
that it is not damaged.
4.
Checking connector
Spray universal oil in the connector and blow
clean with compressed air.
Caution! Make sure that the terminals are
not bent or damaged.
If no defects are detected during the
function check, and no corrosive damage is
found in the connector, continue to step 5.
If defects are detected during the function
check or if there is any corrosive damage in
the connector, the whole cable harness in
the door and the connector in the a-pillar
must be replaced. Then continue to step 9.
5.
Greasing connector
If the connector is OK:
Install a piece of hose (approx. 5 cm long)
on the tube of low temperature grease as
shown in the illustration.
6.
Press the hose-end against the female
terminal on the door and squeeze in low
temperature grease so that it comes out on
the other side. Using the same method, fill
the whole connector with low temperature
grease.
7.
Disconnect the connector in the a-pillar and
fill the whole backside on the connector with
low temperature grease.
Do the same thing with the other front door.
8.
Installing front door
Carefully lift the door into place.
Caution! Get help from a co-worker
during this step.
Install the screws to the hinges. Tighten to
24 Nm
Continue to step 19.
If corrosion is found in the connector, follow the instructions below.
9.
Replacing connector in a-pillar
If there is corrosive damage on the
connector, it must be replaced with two
moisture-proof connectors.
Cut off the leads as close as possible to the
connector in the a-pillar.
10.
Installing connector
Splice in the new moisture-proof connector
(the small connector is only used for the left
door).
Caution! Make sure that you splice the right lead,
color to color.
Splicing lead, see:
Repair and installation
Section Leads and fuses
Leads
Install the new connector in the a-pillar. The
16-pin connector must be installed in the
front section of the rubber conduit with the
small connector in the rear section when
installed in the vehicle.
11.
Installing front door
Carefully lift the door into place.
Caution! Get help from a co-worker
during this step.
Install the screws to the hinges. Tighten to
24 Nm
Note! Do not tighten the screw for the
door-stop yet.
12.
Removing door panel
Remove the door panel, see:

connector in the rear hole.
Move the red lock on the connector
rearward.
Press in the lock (2) and remove the
connector.
15.
Removing loudspeaker
Drill out the three blind rivets that hold the
loudspeaker. Use a drill with diameter 5 mm.
16.
Removing cable harness
Remove:
- the four clips (1)
- the connector (2)
- the frame from the rubber conduit (3).
Remove the rubber conduit in the door and
remove the cable harness.
