SUBJECT:
High RPM at cold start.

REFERENCE: VIDA

DESCRIPTION:

Due to a momentary communication delay the engine speed can exceed the normal 1600 RPM at cold start on vehicles equipped with Automatic transmissions, and can reach 4000 RPM for less than 1 second. This is due to the ECM anticipating that the vehicle is in gear when in fact it is not. The correct cold start RPM is realized when the communication is established.

During the momentary high RPM, it is not possible to engage a gear as there is a safeguard in the transmission that electronically prevents gear engagement above a pre determined RPM limit.

As this very random behavior may be disconcerting to a customer, a change has been made to the Engine management logic to prevent this communication delay at start up from triggering this high RPM. The logic change can be downloaded to a customer's vehicle by following the instruction under the service heading.
