- Ignition off.
- Remove the Winter (W) mode selector from the center console. See Replacing the panel with integrated winter mode switch.

Check that the winter (W) mode selector button does not stick in the depressed position. Shake the mode selector. Check there are no loose components in the switch.

Connect an ohmmeter between terminal #2 and #3. The ohmmeter must show infinite resistance with the W-button disconnected and approximately 0 Ohm with the W-button depressed. Check the cable between the mode selector connector terminal #2 and transmission control module (TCM) terminal #37. Check for a short-circuit to ground.
