Checking components
For variable valve timing control to function properly, the engine oil must be at the right level, of the right grade and free from contaminants.
Check the engine oil level and grade; check especially for contaminants.
The diagnostic trouble code indicates that the basic camshaft setting has been changed. The most likely causes are:
- Improperly meshed timing belt.
- Faulty camshaft changeover valve (seized valve slide).
Hint: First check that the camshaft and crankshaft are properly adjusted in regard to an improperly meshed timing belt.
Try cleaning the camshaft switchover valve if the camshaft and crankshaft are properly adjusted.
If the above fault tracing does not remedy the fault, try with a new camshaft switchover valve.
Remedy as necessary.
Hint: The fault can also be caused by a damaged variable valve timing unit. If the above fault tracing/measure does not help, it could indicate a damaged variable valve timing unit.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.
- Start the engine
- Read off the engine coolant temperature (ECT)
- Start the quick test for adaptation of the camshaft when the engine coolant temperature is between 60 °C and 100 °C.
- Increase the engine speed to at least 2000 rpm
- Check that the quick test starts. The quick test has started when "Adaptation camshaft" changes status from "Not in operation" to "In operation".
Hint: In some cases the quick test can be carried out extremely quickly. Check the status in the graphic display if in doubt.
- The quick test has been carried out when "Adaptation camshaft" is back in "Not in operation".
- The engine must be at idle speed when the quick test is carried out.
Check the value of the camshaft discrepancy (adaptation camshaft) when the quick test has been carried out. The value must be between -8° and +8°.
