SUBJECT Service Campaign 159A, Parking Brake Owner's Manual Supplement/Adjustment
REFERENCE: SMB 55-159
DESCRIPTION:
Volvo Cars of North America (VCNA) has announced Service Campaign 159A, Parking Brake Owner's Manual Supplement/Adjustment, affecting the above model and Model Year vehicles with manual transmissions only. In an effort to facilitate proper parking brake engagement, customers have been informed that their authorized Volvo retailer will adjust the parking brake at no charge. In addition, Volvo has provided to these customers a supplement to the owner's manual detailing instructions for proper parking brake use.
The Service procedure below details how to perform this adjustment.
Note!
The following service procedure should be done on a vehicle with brakes which are cool or slightly warm. You should be able to comfortably touch all braking surfaces; if not, allow the brakes to cool down before proceeding.
SPECIAL TOOLS
SERVICE:
1.
Initial adjustment/equalization
Pull up the parking brake lever very hard five times.
Note!
It is vital that this is done to correctly orient all system components.
2.
Make the adjuster nut accessible
Make sure that the parking brake lever is in its released position (fully down).
Release the lever boot to make the adjuster nut accessible.
To release the lever boot, carefully use a plastic bone tool, 9814071, to push and release the plastic tabs (push in and lift up).
There are three plastic tabs on the driver's side that you must release before you can lift the boot.
Note!
Be careful. The tabs and the plastic frame are fragile and easy to break.
Slacken the adjuster nut counter-clockwise until the nut is even with the end of the adjuster rod, and pull hard on the parking brake lever five times.
Make sure that the parking brake lever is in its released position (fully down).
3.
Adjust the brake caliper
The brakes must not be so hot that you cannot touch them.
Raise the car so that the rear wheels can rotate freely.
Check that the parking brake lever is in its released position (fully down).
With the engine at idle, depress the brake pedal five times so that the automatic adjustment of the brake caliper is activated. Turn engine off.
4.
Check friction
Rotate the rear wheels to check that there is no abnormal friction. There should be no sensation that the brakes are dragging.
Note!
For all-wheel drive vehicles, there is some friction in the powertrain, which is completely normal.
It is therefore vital that this AWD friction is taken into consideration during adjustment.
Note!
The friction may vary slightly between the left and right sides.
Always rotate one wheel at a time!
5.
Make final adjustments
First tighten the cable's adjuster nut clockwise until 7 mm (9/32") of the rod end sticks out above the nut.
Then tighten the adjuster nut until there is light drag (friction) on the brake discs with the lever in the released position (fully down).
Note!
For cars with an earlier version of the adjuster nut (M6), it may be necessary to tighten the nut down more than on the later version with M8 nut.
After adjusting the nut, pull up the lever at least five notches. Repeat this five times.
With the lever in its released position (fully down) , check that there is light drag (friction) on the brake discs when the wheels are rotated.
When there is light drag (friction) on one of the wheels, screw the adjuster nut back counterclockwise one full turn, and pull up the parking brake lever five times, pulling at least five notches up each time.
With the parking brake lever in the released position (fully down), rotate the wheels to check that there is no drag (friction) from the parking brake.
If there is drag (friction), slacken the nut a little more and pull five times on the lever as specified above. Recheck.
Reinstall the lever boot.
