Condition

The L signal between the governor and the central electronic module (CEM) is used both to pre-magnetize the generator (GEN) and to provide a signal to the central electronic module indicating that the generator (GEN) is not charging when the engine is running. When the generator (GEN) starts charging, the charge increases in stages for a short time. At the same time the load on the engine also increases in stages. The generator (GEN) will not charge the battery if the L signal is missing.

Note! The generator (GEN) regulator can self magnetize the rotor and start charging in this way. This only happens at speeds in excess of approximately 2300 rpm. There is no charge engagement by stages with self magnetization, the generator operates at full charge immediately.

Possible source
- Contact resistance or oxidation in the connectors
- Open-circuit in the L signal cable between the generator (GEN) and the central electronic module (CEM), short-circuit to ground or voltage.

Fault symptom[s]
- The battery discharges
- The "Generator not charging" warning lamp does not light when the ignition is switched on
- The "Generator not charging" warning lamp is lit when the engine is running.
