Power Steering Pump
Power steering pump, replacing
Note! As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Disconnecting the hoses and connectors
Warning! Used fluid is considerably more dangerous than new fluid. Avoid skin contact with the oil.
Remove:
- cold air inlet hose to control module
- the oil hose from the mounting on top of the power steering pump
Note! If there is dirt in the fluid, drain the system and remove the hoses from the steering gear.
- the connector (applies only to cars with 5-cylinder engines).
Removing drive belt
- Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump
- Use a fixed wrench and turn clockwise to take the load off the automatic tensioner
- Remove the drive belt.
Diesel only:
Remove the auxiliaries belt. Turn the timing belt tensioner lug counter-clockwise with an open wrench.
Draining oil
Install lock grip pliers on the hose from the fluid reservoir as close to the power steering pump as possible.
Extract the oil with the suction unit according to Workshop Guide Bulletin 239.
Note! Place paper over the generator (GEN) as protection against oil.
Slacken off the hose clamp. Remove the hose from the power steering pump.
Warning! Avoid skin contact with the oil.
Removing the pressure hose
Slacken off screw (1) a few turns.
Remove:
- the lock bracket (2)
- the pipe nipple at the pump.
Removing the power steering pump
Remove:
- the three mounting screws for the power steering pump through the hole in the pulley
- the stay at the rear edge of the power steering pump (applies only to diesel)
- the power steering pump by lifting it straight up.
Raise the front end so that the wheels are unimpeded.
Turn the steering wheel between full locks. Collect oil spillage from the pressure and return hose.
Installing the power steering pump
Note! Place paper over the generator (GEN) as protection against oil.
Install:
- the servo pump
- the three mounting screws through the pulley. Tighten to 25 Nm
- the stay at the rear edge of the power steering pump (applies only to diesel)
- the return and pressure hose. Use a new O-ring on the pressure hose.
Remove the lock grip pliers from the return hose.
Installing the pressure hose
Tighten the screw clip on the sub-frame. Tighten to 10 Nm.
Install:
- the pipe nipple in the pump. Tighten to 25 Nm
- the lock bracket (2).
Tighten the screw (1). Tighten to 24 Nm.
Note! There may be a gap (3) of a few millimeters between the pipe coupling and the power steering pump. Bend the bracket so that the twelve edged mounting on the bracket is on the nut.
Installing drive belt
Install:
- the drive belt
- cold air inlet hose to the control module
- the connector (applies only to cars with 5-cylinder engines).
Filling with oil
Note! Study the fluid product information sheet before starting work.
Fill the servo reservoir with oil. Bleed the system
- For the correct oil grade, see specifications
- Repeatedly turn the steering wheel to full lock. Top up the oil if necessary
- Lower the car
- Apply the parking brake. Start the engine
- A: Turn the steering wheel slowly to the right. Hold on full lock for 2seconds
- B: Turn the steering wheel slowly to the left. Hold on full lock for 2 seconds
- Repeat steps A and B 20 times.
Note! Move the car after the operation has been carried out 10 times to avoid damage to the tires.
