This bulletin provides an overview of model year 2002 Volvo warranty coverage. Specific warranty changes have occurred in the components listed under the Accessories Warranty. Please review the changes with all retailer personnel involved in communication and administration of Volvo warranties.

* If a Volvo-approved accessory is purchased and installed by a Volvo retailer as part of your new car purchase, the warranty period is four (4) years or 50,000 mi. (80,000 km), whichever occurs first. The warranty period will start and run concurrently with the New Car Limited Warranty. If a Volvo-approved accessory is installed by a Volvo retailer after your new car purchase, it will be warranted for the balance of your New Car Limited Warranty period, or for a period of one year from the date of installation, whichever is longer. Some genuine Volvo parts/accessories are covered by their own specific limited warranty for a different period. For those parts/accessories, the applicable warranty is supplied at the time of purchase, including a list of conditions and limitations.

* Volvo has also made changes to the services performed at each maintenance interval. Please refer to the maintenance interval services listed on pages 60-65 of the Warranty and Service Records Information booklet.

During September your retail facility was mailed two 2002 model year warranty posters. These posters provide the most current and important facts regarding the Volvo warranties for the 2002 model year vehicles. They will assist you in communicating the Volvo warranties to customers, and are in compliance with the Magnusson-Moss legislation. These posters must be prominently displayed in your showroom and service areas separate and distinct from previous model year posters. If you require additional posters, please contact your regional representative.

2002 New Car Limited Warranty - 4 Years or 50,000 mi. (80,000 km)

The warranty period for repairs due to defects in material or workmanship is four (4) years or 50,000 mi. (80,000 km), whichever occurs first. Vehicles used for commercial purposes are covered for one (1) year or 15,000 mi. (24,000 km), whichever occurs first.

The warranty starts on the date the vehicle is sold/delivered to the first retail purchaser or put into service, whichever occurs first. Any remaining portion of the warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners free of charge.

Vehicles placed into retailer demonstrator service will receive the remainder of the New Car Limited Warranty period when retailed.

Note:
Authorized Volvo retailers performing warranty repairs that require parts to be repaired or replaced due to defects in material or workmanship are required to use ONLY genuine new or remanufactured parts, sold, supplied, or approved by Volvo Cars of North America, LLC or Volvo Cars of Canada Ltd.

2002 Adjustments Coverage Period - 12 Months or 12,000 mi. (20,000 km)

Adjustments that are refinements to original factory fittings or alignments and that are required as part of the break in period will be made during the Adjustments Coverage Period. Exceptions are items covered under normal maintenance services including pre-delivery or items excluded in the New Car Warranty section of the Owner's Warranty and Service Records Information booklet. The warranty period for adjustments is twelve (12) months or 12,000 mi. (20,000 km), whichever occurs first.

The term "adjustments" refers to minor repairs not usually associated with the replacement of parts or normal maintenance service items. Parts that are covered for replacement because of wear during the adjustment period only are wiper blades, brake rotors, remote keyless entry batteries, shock absorbers, and clutch lining. These items may be covered under the basic warranty period if manufacturing defects cause the failure. Examples of labor only repairs which are covered during the adjustments period are wheel balancing, hood adjustment and wheel alignment.

Battery

Under the New Car Limited Warranty, the original equipment battery installed in model year 2002 vehicles is covered against defects in parts and labor for two (2) years or 50,000 mi. (80,000 km), whichever occurs first. Should the battery fail after two (2) years, but before the 50,000 mi. (80,000 km) limitation, Volvo will credit the customer as follows:

* Third Year - 50% of the suggested retail parts price, 100% labor.

* Fourth Year -25% of the suggested retail parts price, 100% labor.

Emission Warranties - 2 Years or 24,000 mi. (40,000 km)

The emission control system and specific components carry their own warranty. Under the terms of the Emissions Design and Defect Warranty, the warranty period is two (2) years or 24,000 mi. (40,000 km), whichever occurs first. Certain components are covered for eight (8) years or 80,000 mi. (130,000 km), whichever occurs first. Refer to the Warranty Policy and Procedures manual for further detailed information. The warranty begins on the date the vehicle is sold to the first retail purchaser or put into service, whichever occurs first. Any remaining portion of the warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners free of charge.

Note:
California, Massachusetts and Vermont have additional emissions warranty coverage. Refer to the 2002 California, Massachusetts and Vermont Emissions System Warranty section of the owner's Warranty and Service Records Information booklet or the Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual for further detailed information. Model Year 2002 Seat Belt and Supplemental Restraint Systems Limited Warranty Five (5) Years, Unlimited Mileage / Kilometers

The warranty begins with the date the vehicle is sold / delivered to the first retail purchaser or put into service, whichever occurs first. Any remaining portion of the warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners.

Model Year 2002 Parts And Accessories Limited Warranty - One (1) Year, Unlimited Mileage / Kilometers

The warranty period for parts is one (1) year, beginning with the date the part or accessory was purchased. There is no mileage / kilometer limitation.

Some parts and accessories are covered by a specific limited warranty for a different period, e.g., snow tires. The applicable warranty is supplied at the time of purchase, listing the condition and limitations for these parts.

2002 Corrosion Protection Limited Warranty

The warranty period is divided into the segments listed below for a total of eight (8) years. For each of these segments, there is no mileage / kilometer limitation.

The warranty begins with the date the vehicle is sold / delivered to the first retail purchaser or put into service, whichever occurs first.

What Is Warranted

1 - Defects to exterior painted sheet metal surfaces for a period of one (1) year.

2 - Perforation of the body sheet metal panel for a period of five (5) years.

3 - Structural damage due to rust / corrosion for a period of eight (8) years.
