Gear selector lever, minimizing noise

Background

Customers may complain of a squeaking or creaking noise while moving the gear shift lever on manual gearbox S60 and V70 cars. This bulletin describes how to lubricate and adjust the lever to minimize noise.

Removing center console 1

Remove the center console, see VADIS:

Gear selector assembly, replacing.

Remove the upper screws for the gear selector lever.





Remove the gear lever mounting (2).

Pull the black spring tensioner (1) backward and out.

Push the mechanical cable to one side. Lubricant the cable sleeve for the gear selector lever using a small amount of wheel bearing grease (1). Lubricate the ball and ball holder using silicon grease (2) (Part No. 1161326).

Secure the mechanical cable at the lever Secure the mechanical cable using the catch. Ensure that the mechanical cable is secure and locked in place. Press the gear selector lever into the mounting. Install the upper screws for the gear selector lever.

Move the left-hand front seat as far back as possible. Remove the side panel on the left-hand side of the center console.

Press down the gear selector lever knob and turn a quarter to the left. Then pull the knob straight upward.

Remove the panel for the pen holder.

Carefully press the catches inward and lift-up the panel.

Detach the gear selector surround from the center console.

Press in the rear catches. Lift the gear selector surround upward slightly. Carefully pull the gear selector surround so that it releases from the lock.

(Shift the gear selector surround towards the 5th gear position).

Carefully lift the gear selector surround from the center console, move the surround over the gear selector lever and place to one side.

Remove:





- the lock (1) for the angle lever side cable and then bend the mechanical gearbox cable outward

- all three screws for the cover (2)

- the cover and ball holder

- the gear selector lever (3) from the angled lever (lift the gear selector lever upward slightly and angle it away from the angled lever).

Remove the gear selector lever from the mounting for the mechanical gearbox cable as follows.

Lift up the gear selector lever and turn so that the shorter section is pointing to the right.

Use a screwdriver to pry one side of the retaining clip at the same time as pulling the gear selector lever straight up.

Lift up the cable sleeve. Apply a small amount of wheel bearing grease (P/N 1161241) inside tie cable duct (2).

Apply a small amount of wheel bearing grease (P/N 1161241) to the plastic adjuster ring (3) secured on the lever and on the black grommet.

Apply a small amount of silicon grease (P/N 116326) to the inside of the lower ball holder (4) and between the upper the lower ball holder.

Secure the ball holder at the lever.

Grasp the mechanical gearbox cable (1) and lift into the gear selector assembly.

Press down the gear selector lever in the cable duct (2) (the retaining clip will then open).

Check that the retaining clip has secured the gear selector lever in the mechanical cable by gently pulling the cable.

Apply a small amount of silicon grease (P/N 1161326) to the cut-out for the angled lever.

Align the gear selector lever and secure in the angled lever (3).

Apply a small amount of silicon grease (P/N 1161326) to the large gear selector lever ball and then install the upper ball holder.

Install the cover and the screws (4). Tighten the screws.

Bend the mechanical gearbox cable to the left.

Install the retaining clips (5) on the sleeve. Secure the mechanical gearbox cable by the angled lever.

Ensure that the mechanical gearbox cable is securely installed.

Reinstall the side panel on the center console.

Bend each clip (x3) outward and at the same time pull each of the sides upward and over one of the clips.

Start at the inside.

Apply a small amount of silicon grease (P/N 1161326) to each clip at the side of the felt.

Caution!
Do not apply any grease to the felt.

Continue to lubricate the outside of the catches. 12





Apply a small amount of silicon grease (P/N 1161326) to the outside of the catches and to the lug.

Caution
Carefully install the manual gear selector top panel (sport shifter)





Reinstall the upper section on the lower (can only be aligned one way). Ensure that each clip engages the lock.

Wipe away any excess grease.

Caution!
Do not apply any grease to the interior components.

Position the gear selector surround over the gear selector lever

Carefully insert the gear selector surround in the center console (shift the gear selector lever to the 5th gear position).

Secure the gear selector housing in the front catches first and then lock into the rear.

Install both panels.

Install the gear selector lever knob. Turn the knob a quarter turn to the right.

The gear selector lever should be in the center. If the lever is not in the center, see mechanical gearbox cable, adjustment (step 18, 19).

Note!
The mechanical gearbox cable must be adjusted so that the gear selector lever is in the center on the manual top panel gear selector assembly (sport shifter).

Select neutral.

Remove the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve from the air cleaner (ACL) housing (applies only to turbocharged models).

Pry the lock (yellow) until it reaches the release position. Use a screwdriver. (The lock must remain in this position during the entire installation.)

Adjust the gear selector lever so that it is in the center position on the top panel gear selector assembly manual (sport shifter).

Measure the distance (A-A) from the side of the gear selector lever and out to the upper edge of the casing.

The distance must be 30 to 31 mm (1 1/4') on both sides. Press the lock into place to reassemble it after adjusting the mechanical gearbox cable.

Measure the distance once more.

Check that all gears can be easily selected.

Assemble the air cleaner (ACL) housing canister purge (CP) valve.
