Starter Motor: Service and Repair






Replacing the starter motor

Removal

Starter motor
- Disconnect the battery negative lead according to Battery, replacing Battery, Replacing.

Caution! When removing and installing the battery leads, see Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.





Turbocharged engines:
- Remove the intake manifold between the front cover plate and the air cleaner (ACL) housing
- Remove the hose between the charge air cooler (CAC) and the electronic throttle module.

Does not apply to turbocharged cars:
- Remove the air cleaner (ACL) housing.

- Remove the front screw from the bracket for the starter motor.
The starter motor bracket is withdrawn during the 2002 model year
- Disconnect the connector and the cable from the solenoid
- Remove the 2 screws securing the starter motor to the transmission
- Remove the starter motor.

Removing the solenoid




- Slacken off the nut. Remove the cable
- Remove the 3 screws
- Lift the solenoid. Unhook the solenoid and the spring and hook.

Installation

Starter motor and solenoid
Install in reverse order.
To install the air cleaner (ACL) housing, see Brake pipe master cylinder / ABS unit, replacing, B5254T2 Brake Pipe Master Cylinder / ABS Unit, Replacing.
For the tightening torques, see below.

Caution! When removing and installing the battery leads, see Battery, disconnecting Battery Disconnecting.

- The screw for the bracket for the starter motor 6 Nm.
The starter motor bracket is withdrawn during the 2002 model year
- The screws securing the starter motor to the transmission: 40 Nm.
