Power Steering Line/Hose: Service and Repair
Replacing the return hose
Note: As the illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models, some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Removing the return hose
Install lock grip pliers on the feeder hose.
Remove:
- the Oetiker clamp
- the hose from the fluid reservoir
- the tie strap
- the clips (3x) for the cable harness.
Raise the car
Remove:
- the splash guard under the engine
- the tie strap around the pipe where the return hose meets the pressure hose
- the heat deflector plate over the steering gear
- the clip on the pipe over the steering gear.
Remove:
- the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) mounting member
- the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) member.
Pull out the heat deflector plate over the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) as far back as possible.
Remove:
- Screw for the clamp on the sub-frame (does not apply to AWD).
Remove the pipe coupling at the steering gear.
Pull the pipe/hose towards the right wheel arch until the end with the nipple can be pulled forward.
Remove the hose.
Note: Make a note of the routing of the hose.
Installing the return hose
Route the hose through the engine compartment.
Pull the pipe/hose towards the right wheel arch until the end with the nipple can be slid backwards to the correct position.
Thread the nipple into the steering gear (use a new O-ring).
Install:
- the clip on the pipe over the steering gear
- the tie strap around the pipe where the return hose meets the pressure hose
- the screw for the clamp on the sub-frame (does not apply to AWD).
Tighten the nipple in the steering gear. Tighten to 25 Nm.
Install:
- the heat deflector plate over the steering gear
- the splash guard under the engine
- the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) mounting member
- the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) member.
Lower the car.
Install:
- hose on the fluid reservoir (Use a new Oetiker clamp)
- the clips (3x) for the cable harness
- the tie strap by the torque rod mounting.
Finishing
Top up the oil level in the servo reservoir. Bleed the system.
For the correct oil quality, see the specifications.
Warning: Avoid skin contact with the oil.
Repeatedly turn the steering wheel to full lock. Top up the oil if necessary.
Lower the car.
Apply the parking brake. Start the engine.
- A Turn the steering wheel slowly to the right. Hold on full lock for 2 seconds
- B Turn the steering wheel slowly to the left. Hold on full lock for 2 seconds.
Repeat operations A and B approximately 10 times.
