Reversing warning system for AEM

Note! This accessory requires software which is specific to the car.

Note! The floor temperature should be at least +15°C (60°F) when carrying out the work.

- Turn the ignition key to '0'
- Remove the key from the ignition switch
- Clean the bumper with a mild detergent solution.

Note! Wait at least five minutes before disassembling the connector or removing other equipment.




- Remove the rear floor cover by lifting and pulling straight out
- Set the floor cover aside
- Unscrew the knobs on the right and left-hand sides of the storage box and lift out the box.




- Remove the battery cover by undoing the two nuts at the front of the battery holder. Then, slacken the screw at the rear edge and remove the holder
- Remove the cover
- Disconnect the battery negative cable.




- Remove the folddown panel at the right-hand side of the luggage compartment.




- Remove the right-hand side panel by first removing the cover and screw at the front edge
- Pull the panel out at the top to release the clip
- Lower the panel inward and lift it out.





On cars with a weatherstrip with four perforations
- Remove the perforated sections (3) of the weatherstrip.

On cars with a weatherstrip with a single perforation
- Remove the weatherstrip.

On all cars
- Loosen the bumper by removing the four nuts (1) in the rear panel
- Open the antenna connector (2).




- Undo the screw (1) at the rear edge of each wheel housing. Unscrew almost fully
- Press the screw with a screwdriver to push the separate end pieces on the inside of the bumper cover backward
- Drill out the pop rivet (2) securing the bumper cover to the bottom, rear edge of each wheel housing.




- Remove the four clips (1) in the bottom edge of the bumper cover by pressing on the centre of the clip until a click is heard
- Pull the bumper back slightly and work out each side (2) to free it from its mounting (3). Then, pull the bumper out fully until it is completely free
- Place the bumper on a surface which will not damage the paintwork
- Carefully remove the protective strip (4) from the tapered clips.




- Clean the outside of the bumper
- Apply the protective paper uniformly to the bumper.

Note! The purpose of the paper is to protect the paint.




- Release the four catches (1) at the top of the bumper, on the right and left-hand sides
- Release the fourteen catches (2) at the top of the bumper
- Release the seven catches (3) at the centre of the bumper
- Release the four catches (4) at the top of the bumper
- Remove the foam and bumper member from the bumper cover.

Note! Do not remove the antenna from the foam.

- Clean the inside of the bumper.




- Identify the mid-point of the bumper cover. This is marked by two '+' symbols, one on either side of the embossing on the inside of the bumper cover at the mid-point. Use the upper '+' symbol to measure off the three horizontal dimensions. For vertical dimensions (1), measure from the top of the embossing and place a mark 54mm (211/64") above it
- Mark the bumper cover for drilling of the four holes as illustrated.




- Pre-drill four 3 mm (1/8") diameter pilot holes as marked. Drill from the inside of the bumper cover.




- Fit the foam and bumper member in the bumper cover
- Drill through the bumper cover, foam and bumper member using a 3 mm (1/8") diameter bit in the pilot holes to provides marks for cutting the holes for the sensor, sensor holder and connector
- Remove the bumper member and foam from the bumper cover.




- Drill the bumper cover using a 9 mm (23/64") diameter bit
- Cut holes in the bumper cover with a 31 mm (17/32") diameter hole saw (P/N 9814069).




- Use a mild detergent solution to wash stones and dirt from the inside of the bumper cover
- Clean around the drilled holes with cleaning wipes (P/N 9192678). Allow to dry
- Apply primer (P/N 9192679) around the holes. Allow to dry.




- Clean around the drilled holes with cleaning wipes (P/N 9192678). Allow to dry
- Apply primer (P/N 9192679) around the holes. Allow to dry.




- Remove the yellow protective film from one side of the tape
- Apply the tape to the sensor holder
- Repeat this step for the other three sensor holders.




- Remove the protective film from the pieces of orange tape on the sensor holders
- Install the sensor holders with the narrower side facing upward, in the horizontal plane with the bumper cover as illustrated.

Note! The tape will adhere immediately.

Caution! Incorrect positioning of the sensors may result in complete or partial loss of function.




- Use primer (P/N9192679) to clean the inside of the bumper at the point where the wiring harness is to be attached
- Attach the wiring harness with butyl tape.




- Remove the foam from the bumper member
- Use a 50 mm (2") diameter hole saw to cut through the pilot holes in the foam
- Refit the foam in the bumper cover.




For the right-hand sensor, a cutout must be made in a guide (1) in the foam to enable the connector to be connected.

- Use a knife to cut out sufficient material to enable the connector to be connected to the sensor
- Install the right-hand sensor and connector. Check that the connector can be connected
- Leave the sensor and connector in place.




- Connect the wiring harness connector to the sensors.

Note! A click should be heard when connecting, indicating that the connector lock is engaged.

- Install the sensors in the holders.




- Hold the bumper with the studs facing downward
- Locate the four pilot holes
- Use the 50 mm (2") hole saw to cut the holes in the bumper member
- When the hole saw bottoms, reverse the bumper member and complete cutting from the other side.

Note! Use a hole saw with a long centre bit.




- To provide space for the sensor connectors, cut out a further 20 mm (3/4") in the direction in which the connectors will be positioned. The width of the cutout should be 30 mm (1 11/64") and the depth 30 mm (1 11/64").

Note! Place the bumper member in position and check first which holes are affected.




- Press the bumper member securely into the foam and bumper cover
- Run the cable (1) from the sensors as illustrated
- Ensure that all catches are firmly engaged.




- Cut away the rubber bushing on the wiring harness
- Lift the bumper into position
- Run the sensor wiring harness through the existing hole in the rear panel, to the right into the space in the panel and then into the luggage compartment through the oblong opening above the hole for the antenna connector.





Note! Ensure that the separate attachments (A) are in position at the right and left-hand sides.

- Refit the bumper by seating the end pieces (1) in the rails (2) and pressing them home
- Refit the four nuts and torque to 18Nm (13 lbf ft).





On cars with a weatherstrip with four perforations as per item
- Install the rubber pads from the kit over the four nuts as follows:
- Pads (1, 4) should be butted against the weatherstrip. If necessary, cut away the area (1) around the nut in order to expose it
- Pad (2) should be squeezed together slightly to fit in the cutout
- Pad (3) should be adjusted so that its lower edge butts against the weatherstrip. Cut away the part of the pad which extends beyond the weatherstrip, taking care not to remove too much material
- Cut an opening in rubber pad (4) to allow the sensor wiring harness to pass through.

On cars with a weatherstrip with a single perforation as per item
- Install a new weatherstrip.

On all cars
- Reconnect the antenna connector.

- Secure the bumper cover with the screws at the rear edge of each wheel housing
- Secure the bumper cover with pop rivets at the bottom, rear edge of each wheel housing
- Refit the four clips in the underside of the bumper, at the mid-point.

Note! Leave the protective paper on the bumper. This will be required later when painting the sensor holders and sensors.




- Mark out surfaces for locating the Velcro strips on the control module and on the rear edge of the air outlet behind the right, rear wheel housing
- Attach the Velcro strips
- Connect the cables from the sensors, as well as the cable with the 16-pin connector from the kit, to the control module
- Install the control module.




- Slacken the screw (1) in the locking tab for the AEM control module, behind the right-hand wheel housing
- Pull out and remove the locking tab.




- Lift the AEM control module out of its bracket.




- Disconnect the large connector from the AEM control module by depressing the latch (A) and pulling the black locking handle (B) in the direction of the arrow until a snap is heard
- Pull the connector out of the AEM control module.




- Remove the black locking cover holding the black contact in place in the connector by pulling it in the direction of the arrow
- Remove the black contact by pressing it out using a pointed tool inserted in the hole in the opposite end.




- Connect the small wiring harness from the control module to the black contact on the AEM control module as follows:
- Red (R) cable to position 6
- Blue (BL) cable to position 7
- Black (SB) cable to position 8.

Note! Care must be taken when connecting the three cables since the figures marked on the top and bottom of the black contact are extremely small.




- Refit the black contact in the connector and lock in position with the locking cover
- Push the connector firmly into the AEM control module and lock it with the black locking handle
- Reinstall the AEM control module and tie up any excess wiring
- Refit the locking tab on the AEM control module and torque the screw to 10Nm (8 lbf ft).

- Clean the visible surfaces of the sensors and sensor holders with cleaning wipes (P/N9192678).Allow to dry
- Apply a thin coating of primer (P/N 9192679) to the sensors and sensor holders. Allow to dry for at least 10 minutes
- Paint the sensors and sensor holders as described in the separate instruction (P/N 8641279) in the kit.

Note! Use the paint recommended by Volvo, applying a maximum of two coats.

Caution! Too many coats of paint may result in complete or partial loss of function. The sensors must be painted to achieve satisfactory function.

- Remove the protective paper from the bumper.

- Reconnect the battery negative cable
- Refit the battery cover and holder
- Refit the right side panel
- Refit the folddown panel
- Reinstall the storage box
- Refit the rear floor cover
- Programme the software in accordance with the service information in VIDA
- Check the operation of the system.
