Preparatory Work
Remove
- the wheel
- the anti-roll bar link from the spring strut.
Note: Use a Torx wrench as a counterhold in order to prevent damaging the gaiter.
Remove:
- the ABS line from the spring strut
- the ABS sensor. Hang up the sensor using a piece of wire.
Removing the position sensor
Remove
- the screw
- the position sensor from the spring strut
Measure the spring strut position in relation to the wheel spindle before removal
Note: The measurements are taken so that the same camber angle can be obtained when installing.
- Measure across the wheel spindle/spring strut at the upper screw as illustrated
- Before measuring clean off any dirt from the measuring surfaces
- Note the measurement.
Removing the spring strut
- Remove the screws that hold the spring strut in the wheel spindle. 2pcs
Loosen the connector by the suspension turrents and the lead from the clips
Pull down the lead to the wheel housing
Hint: Tie a wire in the cable harness for easier installation
Remove
- the three nuts holding the shock absorber bearing in the bodywork
- the spring strut.
Removing the shock absorber bearing
Secure the spring strut in a vise.
Remove:
- the nut for the shock absorber bearing. Use socket 999 5467 and a 3/8" Torx-wrench as a counterhold
- washer
- the mounting.
Removing the spring
Relieve the spring seat. Use hydraulic piston 951 2911 with claw 951 2914.
Remove:
- the fixing nut on the shock absorber. Use socket 999 5469 and a 3/8" Torx-wrench as a counterhold
- the spring seat
- the spring
- the rubber bump stop and gaiter.
Check that the spring strut bearing (1), spring seat (2) and rubber bump stop with boot (3) are free of damage. Replace if necessary.
Installing the spring
Compress the new spring to a length of approximately 260 mm. Use hydraulic piston 951 2911 with claw 951 2914.
Install:
- the bump stop with the boot
- the spring
- the spring seat.
Install the fixing nut. Tighten to 70 Nm. Use socket 999 5469 and a 3/8" Torx-wrench as a counterhold.
Installing the shock absorber bearing
Install:
- the support plate
- washer
- the nut. Tighten to 70 Nm. Use socket 999 5467 and a 3/8" Torx-wrench as a counterhold.
Installing the spring strut
Fit the spring strut in the body with new nuts, 3pcs. M8
Pull up the shock absorber's lead in the engine compartment and plug in the connector by the suspension turrent.
Fit the lead in the clips
Install the spring strut on to the stub axle. Use new screws and new nuts. Tighten to 25 Nm.
- Adjust the spring strut and stub axle to the measured value.
Note: Ensure that measurement is performed at same points as when removing.
- Tighten to 105 Nm. Angle-tighten 90°. Use bevel protractor 951 2050.
Installing position sensor
Install
- the position sensor
- the screw for the position sensor, 1 pc. M6
Finishing
Install:
- the anti-roll bar link to the spring strut. Use a new nut. Tighten to 50 Nm. Counterhold using a Torx wrench to prevent damaging the gaiter
- the ABS sensor. Tighten to 10 Nm.
Note: Ensure that the ABS sensor seat in the stub axle is absolutely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush.
Install:
- the ABS sensor cable in the bracket
- the wheel.
