Replacing the Steering Column






Replacing the steering column

Caution! The battery must not be connected when the SRS steering wheel module is removed or installed.

Removing steering column

Preparations





Disconnect battery negative lead. Ignition switch to position I so that the steering wheel lock is disengaged

Remove steering wheel module
Slacken off the two torx screws (TX30) on the reverse of the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel 90° in both directions to access the screws.
Disconnect the connector and lift off the steering wheel module.

Removing steering wheel

Removing knee bolster





Remove knee bolster (certain variants)
Push the floor carpet to one side to access the screwed joints with the transmission tunnel.

Removing connectors and windshield wiper windshield wiper stalk





Remove:
- immobilizer antenna ring connector (1)
- windshield wiper stalk connector. Separate windshield wiper stalk connector
- windshield wiper stalk
- cable for ignition switch interlock (2) (certain versions). First turn the ignition key to position 1. Use flat nosed pliers on the cable. Press together the catches on the cable. Pull cable out of the ignition switch.

Removing electrical components





Remove SRS contact reel (three screws)

Disconnect and separate turn signal lamp connector on the reverse (not illustrated). Remove turn signal lamp stalk

Separate ignition switch contact plate. Use a screwdriver

Disconnect the cable from the SRS contact reel. Place contact reel to one side

Removing steering wheel lock





Drill out mounting screws
Center punch the screws first.
Drill, first with a 3 mm (0.118 in) drill bit, then with an 8 mm (0.315 in) drill bit.
Remove steering wheel lock.

Removing steering column





Remove cable duct from steering column

Remove:
- lower steering shaft joint mounting screw
- the screws that secure the steering column to cowl.

Remove steering column
Pull back steering column.
Twist the lower shaft toward the wheel arch. Angle the lower part of the steering column diagonally backward.

Note! Take care not to damage the dashboard when removing the steering column.

Installing steering column

Install steering column





Hang steering column in the cut-out in the cowl
Locate the long mounting screws (1) in the cowl. Tighten to 50 Nm .

Install lower steering shaft joint
Install screw (2), and locknut in the lower steering shaft mounting on the joint. Tighten the nut to 30 Nm .

Note! Use a new screw and locknut for the joint.

Installing ignition switch





Install ignition switch
Turn the ignition key to position I. Depress lug. Install the ignition switch.

Note! Ensure that you secure the ignition switch to the steering column using the guide lugs (not illustrated).

Tighten ignition switch mounting screws. Tighten carefully first to ensure that the ignition switch is correctly located. Then remove the screws. Use socket 45 TX (TORX E8).

Install contact plate on the ignition switch connector

Installing turn signal lamp stalk and SRS contact reel





Install:
- turn signal lamp stalk
- connector holder
- connector
- cable harness
- SRS contact reel. Tighten to 2.5 Nm .
Connect connector. Ensure that the catches engage properly, and that the rubber cap for the contact reel connector is in place. Secure cable with the two clips.

Installing ignition switch interlock cable and windshield wiper stalk





Install ignition switch interlock cable (certain variants)
Turn ignition key to position I or II.
Press cable into place in ignition switch. Ensure that the catches on the cable engage in the ignition switch.

Install:
- windshield wiper stalk and connector
- the immobilizer antenna ring connector.

Installing knee bolster





Install knee bolster (certain variants)
Tighten the screwed joint to 20 Nm .

Installing panel and steering wheel covers





Install:
- steering wheel covers
- panel under dashboard together with the floor lighting switch.

Note! To zero the SRS contact reel and install the steering wheel.
