Shift Solenoid S3. Hydraulic Fault
Hydraulic faults
Checking shift solenoid S3
Note! On activation, the transmission should not be colder than room temperature.
- Ignition on.
- Activate shift solenoid S3.
A "click" should be heard when the solenoid is activated. Use a stethoscope to hear the "click"more audibly.
A mechanical fault is indicated if the solenoids fail to click.
Does the solenoid click?
Yes - Check the selector lever position sensor adjustment
No - Replacing the transmission
-------------------------------------------------
Check the selector lever position sensor adjustment
- Ignition on.
- Read off the position of the selector lever.
Move the selector lever into all positions several times and check that the lever position is updated. If the display shows an undefined position, such as O2, the selector lever is incorrectly adjusted.
If necessary, adjust the selector lever position sensor, see Checking and adjusting the gear-shift position sensor Adjustments.
Rectify as necessary.
Was the selector lever position sensor incorrectly adjusted?
Yes - Checking contact resistance and corrosion
No - Checking the resistance of the circuit to solenoid S3
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the resistance of the circuit to solenoid S3
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the control module, see Replacing the gearbox control module (TCM) Replacing the Gearbox Control Module (TCM).
- Connect the breakout box, see Connecting the breakout box, B5234T9, B5244T7 Connecting The Breakout Box.
Connect an ohmmeter between the breakout box:
#A48 (#A48) and #A53 (#A53)
The ohmmeter should show 12-18 ohms.
OK - Replacing the transmission
Not OK - Checking contact resistance and corrosion
-------------------------------------------------
Checking contact resistance and corrosion
Check transmission and control module connectors A and B for contact resistance and corrosion, see Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.

-------------------------------------------------
Replacing the transmission
Fault diagnosis indicates a fault in the transmission. Try a new transmission, see Removing the transmission Transmission, Removal.
Select Continue when the fault has been rectified.
Continue - Resetting adaptation and oil grade counters

Resetting adaptation and oil grade counters
Resetting the adaptation
Resetting adaptation and the counter for "Transmission oil change"
Hint: The transmission has torque controlled adaptive pressure control. Pressure control means that the transmission regulates the pressure itself during each gear shift. This avoids harsh gear shifting. Each gear shift is evaluated by the control module and stored in the memory. This allows for compensation for wear and tear in the transmission and clutch. It is important that the adaptation in the memory is reset after the transmission has been repaired. This is to ensure normal operation. The oil is replaced during repair; the "Transmission oil change" counter must be reset. If the counter is not reset when the fluid is drained and replaced, there is a risk that a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored in incorrect circumstances.
Note! This applies only if the transmission or one of the components in the transmission have been replaced.
- Ignition on.
Click on the VCT2000 symbol to reset the adaptation and counter.

Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.
Do you want to exit fault-tracing?
Yes - Exit fault-tracing
No - Attempt New Test
