Checking the mechanical transmission cable
Check the mechanical transmission cable function as follows.
- Disconnect the mechanical transmission cable from the transmission
- Check that the mechanical transmission cable is correctly installed. Work from the gear selector assembly and forwards in the car. The mechanical transmission cable should run up in the center console and in a smooth arc through the hole in the firewall.
If the mechanical transmission cable is stiff or incorrectly installed replace it.

Check the gear selector assembly function as follows.
- Remove the gear selector assembly and disconnect the mechanical transmission cable
- Check that the mechanical transmission cable moves smoothly.
If the gear selector lever is stiff grease the pivot ball and joints. If that does not help, replace the gear selector assembly.
