Suspension - Squeaking Noise From Rear

This Service Bulletin replaces the previous SB 772-0001 from June 1999, which should be discarded.

BACKGROUND

On some cars, a squeaking noise can be heard coming from the rear suspension between the rear spring, bump stop and the spring seat. This service bulletin describes the updated method for replacing the bump stop.

Special tools:

999 5660, 999 5498, 999 5499, 999 5500, 999 5501, 951 2050

REMOVING THE SPRING

Rear seat backrest

Fold the backrest forward.

Exposing the upper 9hock absorber mounts

Raise the front floor hatch

Remove the side floor panels

Remove the screws from the front floor hatch Pull back the hatch to release it from its front mountings at the front edge

Remove the cover.





Cover for the upper shock absorber mounting

Remove the cover over the upper shock absorber mounting.

The upper shock absorber mounting

Remove the nut for the upper shock absorber mounting.

Special tools:

999 5498, socket for standard shock absorbers

999 5499, wrench for standard shock absorbers

999 5500, socket for Nivomat shock absorbers

999 5501, wrench for Nivomat shock absorbers.

Rear jacking point and the control arm mounting

Preparations:

Raise the car

Remove the rear wheel on the relevant side

Loosen off the rear jacking point

Remove the 3 screws from the lateral link. This is to detach the control arm mounting

Press the jacking point backward so that it passes the control arm.

Caution! Do not in any way damage the brake line.

Spring

Remove the nut for the anti-roll bar link mounting

Loosen off the nut for the inner trailing arm mounting 2 turns

Remove the nut for the outer trailing arm mounting Tap out the screw.

Note! The screw is locked with splines. The screw cannot be turned.

Pull the trailing arm downwards.

Remove:

- the spring

- the spring seat

- the bump stop.

Clean the spring seat.



INSTALLING THE SPRING

Spring

Bend the control arm downwards.

Install:

- the new bump stop

- the spring seat

- the spring.

Installing the tensioner

Install the long screw for the tensioner on the mounting

Install mounting 999 5660 on the rear axle member.

Note! Ensure that the rear axle mating surfaces are clean where the tool will be used.

Screw tensioner j4 1470-850 into place. Use the long screw.

Installing the outer control arm mounting

Note! The rollers must be in contact with the control arms on both sides.

Press up the control arm using the tensioner so that the screw for the outer mounting on the control arm can be installed. (Do not tighten the nut in this point).

Note! Press in the screw only so far that the splines are not in the bushing.

Note! Ensure that the anti-roll bar link is correctly positioned.

Installing the jacking point

Note! Use a new screw.

Adjust the tensioner so that the mounting for the lateral link can be installed

Install the jacking point. (Do not tighten the screw yet).

Tightening

Adjust the tensioner to the normal position.





Normal position

The rear suspension is in the normal position when the distance from the fender edge (1) to the center of the wheel (2) is 381 mm (15").

Tap in the screw for the outer control mounting so that the splines are in the bushing.





Tighten:

The outer and inner control arm mounting to 80 Nm (60 ft.lb)

The screw for the lateral link to 65 Nm (48 ft.lb). Angle-tighten an additional 60 °.

Note! Use 3 new screws.

The mounting for the jacking point to 105 Nm (77 ft.lb).

Angle-tighten an additional 90 °.

Installing the anti-roll bar link and upper shock absorber mounting





Anti-roll bar link

Install the nut on the anti-roll bar link mounting.

Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft.lb)

Remove the tensioner.

Upper 9hock absorber mounting

Install the wheel. Tighten to 110 Nm (81 ft.lb)

Lower the car completely

Install a washer and nut on the upper shock absorber mounting.

Tighten the nut:

- for standard shock absorbers to 40 Nm (30 ft.lb)

- for Nivomat shock absorbers with M12 nuts to 40 Nm (30 ft.lb)

- for Nivomat shock absorbers with M1O nuts to 20 Nm (15 ft.lb). Angle-tighten an additional g0°.

Special tools:

999 5498, socket for standard shock absorbers

999 5499, wrench for standard shock absorbers

999 5500, socket for Nivomat shock absorbers

999 5501, wrench for Nivomat shock absorbers

951 2050, bevel protractor.





Cover on the shock absorber mountings

Install the cover on the upper shock absorber mounting

Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft.lb).

Reassemble the cargo compartment

Align the floor hatch mountings at the front edge Install the screws in the rear edge

Align the hatch with the rear floor hatch. Tighten the screws

Reinstall the side floor hatches

Fold down the front floor hatch.

Reposition the backrest

Fold up the backrest.
