BACKGROUND
A whining noise may be heard from the rear axle (final drive) between 80 and 95 km/h (50-60 mph) on some AWD and XC cars.
This Service Bulletin describes how to install a new type of counterweight on the viscous coupling housing mounting on the underbody.

WHINING SOUND FROM REAR AXLE/FINAL DRIVE:
1
Preparations
Raise the car.
The vibration damper must be installed on the viscous coupling housing mounting on the underbody.
2
Removing the viscous coupling housing
Install a transmission jack as a support under the viscous coupling housing.
Remove the bolt for the viscous coupling housing mounting (see the illustration).
Lower the viscous coupling housing and propeller shaft. Clean any dirt and under-body sealant from the mounting.
Use Cleaner H, P/N 1161436-9.
3
Drilling holes
Drill a 4.5 mm (11/64") hole.
Note! Shorten the drill bit to approximately 12-15 mm (1/2") to obtain the correct angle for drilling.
Note! Refer to the illustration, and mark mount accordingly, to ensure correct center location for drilling.
Move the drill up.
Support the drill against the propeller shaft and the heat deflector plate.
Align the drill with the center of the mounting.
Drill.
4
Installing the counterweight
Remove the backing from the counterweight.
Press the counterweight into place on the mounting.
Install the screw.
Caution! Make sure the counterweight is positioned so it doesn't interfere with any other parts of the undercarriage.
5
Installing the viscous coupling housing
Lift up the viscous coupling housing using the jack.
Install a new bolt screw.
Tighten to 85 Nm (63 lb.ft).
