Shift Cable: Service and Repair
1. Preparations
- Park car on level surface.
Do not set the parking brake.
- Remove:
Air cleaner
Battery
Battery tray
2. Remove:
- Locking clip and washer on rod arm
- Nuts and washers on cable bracket.
NOTE: No washers on later models.
- Transmission cable from rod arm
Removal Of The Center Console
3. Remove:
- Cigar lighter panel (2 screws)
- Cover plate below parking brake lever.
- Cover plate in the center console storage box.
4. Detach connectors to center console.
- Remove screws (4) and remove the console.
5. Replacement of transmission cable
- Remove transmission cable from gear lever mechanism
- Use flat-nosed pliers to extract cotter pin on cable.
- Remove locking clip holding cable sleeve in lever mechanism.
6. Fold down carpet and remove side panel.
Remove the nuts to cable lead-in in the cowl panel.
- For cars with key interlock only:
Remove key interlock cable from transmission cable.
- Remove the cable
7. Reinstall transmission cable
NOTE:
- Be careful to avoid damaging the cable or sheath by excessive bending.
- Take care not to damage the gaiter.
- Fit cable into lever assembly.
- Reinstall:
Cable lead-in grommet in the cowl panel.
Tighten nuts to: 6 Nm.
Cable sleeve into lever mechanism and lock with clip.
Cable to lever with spindle
- For cars with key interlock only:
Connect the key interlock cable to the transmission cable.
- Reinstall side panel
- Fold carpet back into place.
8. Reinstall center console
- Screws (4)
- Connectors (Black, gray)
- Cover plate in the center console storage box.
- Cover plate below parking brake lever.
- Panel for cigar lighter
- Adjust and install the cable on the transmission as below.

9. Set gear lever to position R.
NOTE: Make sure the transmission cable can move freely in the engine compartment.
10. Push rod arm on transmission forward to position P
NOTE:
- Do not move the transmission cable.
- The transmission cable position must not be altered.
- Make sure you are in Park by trying to roll the car.
- Turn the rod arm to the next position (R).
- Apply grease part No. 1161241-3, or equivalent, sparingly to the rod arm pin.
NOTE: Do not change the position of the lever.
11. Carefully reinstall the cable on the studs and rod arm pin.
- Make sure that neither the transmission cable lever or rod arm change position!
- Secure with washers (early versions only) and nuts.
- Tighten nuts in order lightly, then tighten to: 25 Nm.
- Reinstall washers and locking clip on rod arm.
12. Check
- Lever in N position.
Push lever forward, do not touch lock button.
Play should be felt.
- Lever in D position.
Push lever backward, do not touch lock button.
Play should be felt.
13. Supplementary work
- Reinstall:
Air cleaner
Battery tray
Battery.
- Reconnect cables.
