Checking the gear selector assembly and mechanical transmission cables
Check the gear selector assembly and mechanical transmission cables as follows.
- Let the customer point out the noise during a test drive
- Check for obvious vertical play in the gear selector lever
- If there is a clatter under the dashboard, check if the gear selector lever is exceptionally easy to move when the car is stationary.
Check if the gear selector lever vibrates at the same time as the sound is heard
- Check that the mechanical transmission cables are OK
- Check that the mechanical transmission cable is correctly routed through the firewall
- Check that the gear selector is correctly mounted to the chassis. Check rubber bushings and tightening torques.
If there is play in the gear selector lever remedy using wheel bearing grease.
If the mechanical transmission cables or their routing are not correct replace the mechanical transmission cables.
