Transmission cables, installation

Special tools:
999 5511 PRESS TOOL 999 5511 Press Tool

Caution! Take care not to damage the cables or cable sheaths by bending at tight angles. Take care not to damage the cable boot.

Note! Check that the gear selector assembly rubber bushings and spacer sleeves are OK.

Push the new transmission cables through the firewall




Check that they are on the correct side of the steering column.

Note! The left mounting on the gear selector assembly, and the transmission cable that goes on the left both are marked yellow.

- Push the transmission cables into the sheath as far as possible and work the cables one by one below the air duct and through bracket on the center console.
- Check that the cable marked yellow is operating smoothly in its sheath. The other cable runs slightly stiffer because there is more grease in the sheath.

Install:




- Retaining clips securing the transmission cables in gear selector assembly.
- Ball cups to the gear shift links with tool 999 5511 PRESS TOOL 999 5511 Press Tool.

Install:




- Gear selector assembly to body.

Note! On cars from model year -93:

- Install cross member on the side reinforcement members.
- Install the four screws to the gear selector assembly. Tighten to 25 Nm .
- Tighten cross member bolts to 25 Nm .

Install:




- Screws for center console bracket (early versions).
- Reconnect air duct.
- Two nuts on the lead-in.
- Panel and fold back carpet.

Install:




- Center console with screws in front and rear edges of console.
- Connect connectors. The illustration shows a car with two connectors.

Install:




- Cigar lighter panel/center console locker with two screws in rear edge.
- Certain models: Install data link connector (DLC) to panel.
- Cover plate beneath handbrake lever
- Glove compartment cover
- The gear shift lever boot to the center console. First press on the catches at the front edge, the clips on the sides and rear edge.

Check that dampers on the transmission cable bracket are OK.





Install:
- Transmission cables on cable bracket with the retaining clips.

Note! The outboard bracket and selector cables are marked in yellow.

- Lubricate selector lever lugs with grease P/N 1161241-3.
- Transmission cables to the shift selector with washers and locking clips.

Install:




- Air cleaner (ACL) housing
- Timer valve on air cleaner (ACL) housing. Turbo models only:
- Hoses and connectors.
- battery negative lead.
