Removing transmission cables
Special tools:
999 5511 PRESS TOOL 999 5511 Press Tool
Removing air cleaner (ACL) housing
Remove:
- battery negative lead
- air cleaner (ACL) housing with intake pipe.
Only cars with turbocharged engines:
Detach the timing valve from air cleaner (ACL) housing.
Removing transmission cables from gear bracket
Remove:
- the retaining clips and washers from the gear selector levers
- retaining clips from cable bracket
- transmission cables from the cable brackets.
Note! Note the transmission cable routing in the engine compartment.
Center console
Removing components
Remove:
- cigarette lighter panel/center console locker (two screws in rear edge).
- Certain versions: Data link connector (DLC) from panel.
- cover plate beneath handbrake lever.
- cover in center console locker.
Remove gear shift lever boot from center console.
Press the gear selector lever boot rear snap fastener from underneath, via the hole under the parking brake lever.
Removing center console
Disassemble connectors: The car in the illustration has two connectors.
Remove:
- the screws at the front and rear edge of the center console.
- the center console.
Removing components
Expose the transmission cables grommet in the firewall.
Remove:
- the panel, push the mat to one side and release the cable grommet through the firewall.
- two nuts holding the lead-in and remove the lead-in from the screws in the bodywork.
- the screw holding the bracket to the tunnel (early version).
Pull the air duct apart.
Gear selector assembly
Removing screws
Remove gear selector assembly with four screws.
Note! Cars from model year 93 or later, the cross member for the side reinforcing members should be removed.
Removing gear selector assembly
Remove the transmission cables ball joints from the gear selector assembly levers. Use tool 999 5511 PRESS TOOL 999 5511 Press Tool.
Remove retaining clips holding the transmission cable in the gear selector assembly.
Remove gear selector assembly.
Removing the cable package
Pull out the cables from the center console one by one.
Remove the whole cable package from the car.
