Note! See Drive shafts, removing Drive Shafts, Removing for drive shaft removal. The method is the same for the left and right drive shaft.
Expose the outer constant velocity joint
- Remove the clamps from the boot.
- Pull the boot off of the constant velocity joint.
- Wipe off the grease from the constant velocity joint.
- Fasten the drive shaft in a vise so that the recess for the lock ring points up.
Adapt a drift as described in Adapting a drift Adapting A Drift.
Remove the constant velocity joint from the shaft
- Pry the lock ring out of the groove and position a drift, as described above, between the lock ring lugs.
- Tap out the inner ring on the shaft a bit so that the lock ring is held open.
- Use a brass drift to tap out the constant velocity joint.
Caution! Only tap out the inner ring so as not to damage the bearing race or outer ring.
- Remove the lock ring from the joint.
Remove the clamp from the inner boot if it is to be replaced.
- Pull the boot(s) off of the drive shaft.
Cleaning the inner constant velocity joints
Note! All inner constant velocity joints (manual and automatic) are to be cleaned while assembled and blown clean before greasing. Use grease as specified in Oil, grease etc
Install the new boots on the drive shaft
- Fasten the drive shaft in a vise.
Install the constant velocity joint on the drive shaft.
- Ensure that inner ring is straight in the constant velocity joint.
Tap the constant velocity joint using a plastic club.
- Check that the lock ring sits in its groove.
Fit the boots
Caution! Ensure that there is no grease on the mating surfaces between the boots and the constant velocity joints and the shaft.
Remove excess grease using denatured alcohol.
Pull on the boots on the constant velocity joints and make sure that they are correctly positioned on the drive shaft.
Install new clamps.
- Use pliers 951 2619 Pliers 951 2619 Pliers.
