Checking the Park / Neutral Position (PNP) Switch

Checking the park / neutral position (PNP) switch

Reading off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)

Hint: If the starter motor does not run, the fault may be due to an internal fault in the gear-shift position sensor. In certain cases the transmission control module (TCM) has been unable to store diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) because not all the conditions have been met.

- Ignition on or ignition switch position III for at least five seconds
- Read off diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Fault trace any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before beginning this fault-tracing. Use the VIDA symptom input and select the same symptom as for this fault-tracing.

Were diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the transmission control module (TCM)?

Yes - DONE

No - Checking the park / neutral position (PNP) switch

Checking the park / neutral position (PNP) switch

- Ignition off
- Gear selector in position D
- Try to start the car. It should not be possible to start the car
- Ignition off
- Gear selector in position P or N
- Try to start the car. It should now be possible to start the car.

Was the function OK?

Yes - No Fault Found

No - Checking the gear-shift position sensor

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the gear-shift position sensor

- Ignition off
- Disconnect the transmission connector
- Connect an ohmmeter between terminals #6 and #7 on the transmission connector (transmission side)
- Ignition key in the radio position (I).
Press the "Shift-lock Override" button. Move the gear selector to all gear positions. Check the resistance.
The resistance should be approximately 0 ohms in positions P and N and infinite in all other positions.
Replace the gear-shift position sensor if the resistance is incorrect.

Note! With the ignition on and the transmission disconnected, the transmission control module (TCM) may store diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If the ignition has been on, erase any stored DTCs.

Other information:
- To disconnect the transmission connector, see Solenoid control system, replacing Service and Repair

Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Do you want to exit fault-tracing?
