Oil grade, checking

Check the fluid

Note! Oil grade:Only automatic gearbox fluid (ATF). Dexron III (the fluid must have a G license). This is usually given as Dexron III (G-xxxxx) where xxxxx is a 5 digit serial number. Dexron III-G (without a number) may also occur. The Volvo P/N for this oil is 1161521 (1liter container).

Warning! Avoid skin contact with the oil.

Check the oil. Take a sample with the dipstick.
Is the oil discolored or does it smell burnt?
- Check if diagnostic trouble code TCM-0042, TCM-0046 is stored.
- Also troubleshoot the transmission according to code TCM-0046.
- When changing fluid, see Transmission fluid, replacing .
Is there coolant in the oil (oil grey-colored)?
- Check the oil for coolant, see Checking for coolant in the oil, AW55-50/51SN Checking for Coolant in the Oil
- Determine the cause why there is coolant in the oil.
- Replace the gearbox.

Note! Always replace the cooler and the auxiliary oil cooler (where applicable) if there are signs of water in the transaxle fluid.

Flush clean the oil cooler, pipes and oil hoses
Only use ATF-oil Dexron III. Volvo part no. for this oil is 1161521 (1- liter container).
