Front Steering Knuckle: Service and Repair





Removing stub axle
Raise the car.
Remove





- the wheel
- the anti-roll bar link from the spring strut. Use a fixed wrench as a counterhold
- the ABS sensor. Hang up sensor with a piece of wire
- ABS sensor cable from spring strut





- brake caliper and limiter mounting screws
- the limiter. Hang caliper up with a piece of wire.





- drive shaft screw. Use a screwdriver as counterhold on the brake disc
- locating pin holding brake disc
- brake disc.
Slacken off end of the drive shaft in the hub by knocking the drive shaft into the hub approximately 10 - 15 mm.
Use a rubber or copper mallet.





- tie rod ends from the steering arm. Use puller 999 52S9.





- both screws retaining the spring strut in the stub axle.





Pry out the stub axle.
Pull out the drive shaft and fold to one side. Hang up drive shaft on a hook 999 5045.

Note! Take care not to damage the drive shaft boot.





- nut on ball joint. Use a Torx wrench as counterhold
- stub axle.

Installing stub axle
Install





- stub axle on the trailing arm
- new nut on the ball joint. Tighten to 80 Nm. Use a Torx wrench as counterhold.

Note! Make sure that the mating surfaces on the ball joint and link are clean.





Clean the splines on the drive shaft.
Turn in the stub axle and locate the drive shaft in the hub.
Install drive shaft screw and finger-tighten. Lubricate the screw.

Install

- both screws retaining the spring strut in the stub axle. Use new screws and nuts. Tighten to 105 Nm and angle-tighten 90°. Use bevel protractor 951 2050
- anti-roll bar link to the spring strut. Use a new nut. Tighten to 50 Nm
- ABS sensor cable
- ABS sensor onto stub axle. Tighten ABS sensor to 10 Nm

Note! Ensure that the sensor seat in the stub axle is absolutely clean. Clean the ABS sensor with a soft brush.





- tie rod end onto the stub axle. Use a new nut. Tighten to 70 Nm.

- brake disc. Tighten brake disc locating pin to 8 Nm.

Note! Ensure that the brake disk and wheel rim hub mating surfaces are clean.

Tighten drive shaft screw to 50 Nm. Use a screwdriver as counterhold on the brake disc.





- brake caliper and limiter. Use new screws. Tighten to 100 Nm.
- the wheel according to Installing wheels.
