Replacing the steering wheel lock
Background:
Updated method for replacing the steering wheel lock assembly.
Preparations
Battery 1
- Make a note of the radio code if an anti-theft radio is installed.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.
The steering column 2
- Fold down the steering wheel adjuster lever.
- Raise the steering wheel to the uppermost position.
Removal
Remove: 3
Warning!
The battery must be disconnected when the module is removed or installed.
- the steering wheel according to the method in VADIS.
- the upper cover for the steering column. Use long Torx TX 15 tool.
- the lower cover for the steering column. Use a Torx TX 25 tool.
Caution!
Be careful not to damage the contact reel and wiring harness during work.
Remove:
- the turn signal stalk.
Allow the stalk to hang from the wiring harness.
- the lever for the windshield wipers. Disconnect one of the connectors. Leave the lever hanging from the other connector.
- contact reel.
- the holder for the steering lock lighting.
Removing the lock 4
Warning!
Use protective goggles.
Center punch the screwheads.
- pre-drill the screw heads (1) for the mounting. Use an 3 mm drill bit (A).
- Drill out the screw heads (1). Use an 8 mm drill bit (B).
Note!
To easier remove the screws, it is helpful to use left handed (reverse) drill bits to unscrew the screws. Cobalt drills are recommended.
Remove:
- Connector for ignition lock.
- Wire for steering wheel lock.
- Remove the lock.
Installation
Installing a new steering wheel lock 5
- Position the new steering wheel lock.
- Install new security screws (1).
- Install connector for ignition lock.
- Install cable for steering wheel lock.
- Verify steering wheel lock function.
Install: 6
Note
Do not forget to connect the disassembled connector.
Caution!
Ensure that the boot for the windshield wiper lever is in place.
Caution!
Ensure that no wiring is trapped when the steering column covers are installed.
- the holder for the steering lock lighting. Use a new bulb.
- contact reel.
- the lever for the windshield wipers.
- the lever for the turn signal lamps.
- the lower cover for the steering column. Use a Torx TX 25 tool.
- the upper cover for the steering column. Use a long Torx TX 15 tool.
- the steering wheel. Tighten to 40 ft.lb. Install the airbag module. Tighten to 10 ft.lb.
Final adjustments 7
- Adjust the steering wheel setting.
- Fold up the adjustment lever.
- Connect the battery negative lead.
- Program the radio if applicable.
