116 1454 ODOR TREATMENT 116 1454 Odor Treatment
General and equipment
The air conditioning (A/C) system evaporator has a surface coating which can cause a concrete-like odor. The odor can be treated with an agent that is sprayed on to the evaporator.
Equipment for treating evaporator
- Compressed air spray for liquids, for example, Volvo's rust inhibitor spray P/N 115 9611 SPRAY 115 9611 Spray.
- Protective goggles.
- Rags.
- Vacuum cleaner.
Materials
- Air conditioning (A/C) odor treatment (liquid), P/N 116 1454 ODOR TREATMENT 116 1454 Odor Treatment.
Warning! Read warning text on pack before commencing work. Use protective goggles and gloves when spraying. Seal hole around the spray nozzle with rags during spraying to avoid spray mist leaking out into the car interior. Ensure that ventilation is good.
Preparations for spraying
Opening the evaporator drainage
- Check and correct if necessary that the drainage from the evaporator is not blocked.
- Place a container below the evaporator drainage pipe in order to avoid spillage on the floor.
Warming up the evaporator
- Select recirculation, set temperature control to max. heat and blower selector to max. speed. All vents should be fully open.
- Shut off the air conditioning (A/C) compressor by disconnecting the cable terminals from the pressure switch (Pressostat) in the engine compartment. (The compressor can be overridden if the air distribution selector is in the Defrost position and may therefore start up.)
Allow engine to run at working temperature for 20 minutes to expel all moisture from evaporator.
Assembling the spray
Note! Assemble spray while engine is warming up
- Fit flat nozzle to Volvo rust inhibitor spray and clean nozzle.
- Shake bottle containing Odor treatment air conditioning (A/C) well, and put the bottle in the spray holder.
- Insert spray riser pipe in container and screw spray onto holder.
- Set spray to green mark.
- Connect spray to compressed air.
Hint: Do not tilt the spray excessively! Tilting spray excessively may cause liquid to escape from container!
Hint: If liquid escapes from the container empty it back in and complete the operation.
Disconnection of battery
- Turn off ignition.
- Disconnect battery ground lead.
Removing power unit or fan resistor
- Remove the power unit or fan resistor.
For the 850:
- power unit according to Climate control 850 1992-
- fan resistor according to climate control 850 1992-.
For C70/V70/S70:
- power unit according to Replacing the power unit (Electronic climate control) Replacing the Power Unit (Electronic Climate Control)
- fan resistor according to Replacing blower fan rheostat (MCC/STANDARD) Removal and Replacement.
Caution! Do not disconnect power stage/blower resistor connectors!
Vacuum cleaning the evaporator
- Clean out the evaporator as far as possible with vacuum cleaner through the hole in the evaporator housing for the power unit/blower fan resistor.
Spraying evaporator
Odor elimination in evaporator
- Insert spray nozzle through power unit/blower fan resistor opening in housing.
- Cover opening with cloth.
- Protect interior trim with cloths.
Warning! Use protective goggles and gloves. Ensure that ventilation is good.
- Point the nozzle so the agent is sprayed towards the evaporator.
- Move the nozzle back and forth over the evaporator while spraying, so that. Use all the contents in the bottle.
Operations to complete treatment of evaporator
Connecting battery
- Reconnect battery ground lead.
For C70/V70/S70:
- Reinstall power unit according to Replacing the power unit (Electronic climate control) Replacing the Power Unit (Electronic Climate Control) in reverse order or blower fan resistor according to Replacing blower fan rheostat (MCC/STANDARD) Removal and Replacement In reverse order.
For the 850:
- Reconnect battery ground lead.
Drying evaporator
- Set temperature control to max. heat and blower selector to max. speed.
- Start engine.
- Allow engine to run for 2 minutes.
- Switch off the engine.
- Allow agent to act for 30 minutes.
- Start engine.
- Open car windows.
- Turn on recirculation, blower fan switch on max. speed and temperature selector to max. heat.
- Allow engine to run for 10 minutes to allow cleaning agent to dry and form a protective film, and to prevent it from being washed off by condensate.
Reconnect A/C compressor
- Connect the air conditioning (A/C) compressor by connecting the cable terminals at the pressure switch (Pressostat).
Reinstalling other components
- Reinstall other components removed.
