Rear Brake Pads




Brake pads rear, replacement

Special tools: 115 8147 999 2809, 9992917

Minimum thickness
Replacement point = 2.0 mm

Preparations
- Remove wheel.




Removal of brake pads
- Knock out split pins using a 3mm (0.12") mandrel.
- Remove retaining spring.




- Remove brake pads and shims. Use extractor 999 2917 if brake pads are difficult to remove.

Cleaning and checking
- Clean brake pad contact surfaces in brake caliper and on caliper mounting.
- Check piston dirt guard.
- If dirt guard looks worn, replace it as a precautionary measure.
- If dirt guard is damaged, overhaul brake caliper as Brake caliper rear, overhaul.

Note! If dirt guard is damaged, dirt may have penetrated into the cylinder and so the brake caliper needs to be overhauled.




- Check brake disc friction surface.
- If brake disc shows signs of being skew, check its lateral run out as per Measuring lateral run-out on brake disc .
- If brake disc shows signs of major wear, variations in thickness etc., replace it as per Brake disc rear, replacement.

Note! Min. disc thickness = replacement point = 8.4 mm (0.33"). Minimum recommended disc thickness when installing new brake pads = 8.9 mm (0.35").


Rear brake pads replacement




Inspection of dirt guard
- Press pistons back with a polygrip or tool 999 2809. Take care to avoid damaging dirt guard.
- Check that dirt guard is positioned properly.




Installation of brake pads
- Grease shim on both sides with a thin layer of silicone grease (PN 116 1325-4).
- Install shim towards brake pad rear plates.
- Install brake pads.
- Install one split pin and retaining spring first, then the other split pin.

Finishing and checking
- If brake pipe was not removed from brake caliper, go to NNNA11.
- If brake pipe was removed from brake caliper, top up and bleed braking system as per Bleeding brakes. Then continue as below.
- Check that there are no leaks and that the brakes are working properly.

Check and adjustment
Press brake pedal down a few times.
Check level in brake fluid reservoir.
Adjust parking brake if necessary as per GGGGA. Parking brake, adjustment.




Installing wheel
- Make sure that brake discs and rim contact surfaces are clean.
- Grease hub center rim guide with anti-rust agent 116 1038-3.
- Install wheel.
- Tighten bolts hand tight. Then tighten them crosswise to 110 Nm (80 ft lb). If using an airgun, use torque socket 115 8147

Note! Tightening bolts crosswise to a specific torque setting is important in preventing stresses in the brake disc.
