Programming and Calibrating the Convertible System
1New feature in VST
A new feature during calibration and fault tracing of the convertible top has been introduced in the latest update of the Volvo System Tester program cassette.
In three different menus it is now possible to read out values from the different potentiometers and micro switches while operating the convertible top. The values are measurement of where in the cycle the convertible top is positioned.
For the convertible top to reach the correct preprogrammed values in the end positions, (closed/latched or folded/stored) the convertible top must stop within a certain range in each end position.
Adjust the end stop position as close as possible to the middle of the acceptable calibration range. For example, if the acceptable calibration range is 40-64, adjust the actual position as close as possible to 52.
Monitors list
In monitors list it is possible to read out stored values. In the two other menus actual values are being read.
Note!
It is only possible to read actual values after the button is released.
Note!
When calibrating the potentiometer for the convertible top:
When operating the convertible top to a closed position, the value on the display at the end position, (not latched) must be less than or equal to the pre-programmed range.
When operating the convertible top to an open position, the value on the display at the end position (stored) must be greater than or equal to the pre-programmed range.
Note!
When calibrating the potentiometer for the cover plate lock arm:
When operating the locking arm to open cover plate, the value on the display at the end position (open cover plate) must be greater than or equal to the pre-programmed range.
When operating the locking arm to close cover plate, the value on the display in closed position, (only with stored convertible top) must be less than or equal to the pre-programmed range.

Note!
The VST memory cassette must ( blue memory cassette) be part.no 9511 641-7 issue upgraded in May 1999 or later when calibration is done. If an earlier memory cassette is used, a malfunction may be calibrated into the convertible system.
The convertible top sensor must be programmed and the values calibrated when the convertible top and the control module are replaced.
The calibration compensates for mechanical play in the convertible top. If it is not calibrated the result may be mechanical wear and faulty function.
The sensor values are affected by the entire convertible top. Calibration routines are carried out via the Diagnostics II interface with the Volvo Scan Tool (VST). The sensor values are stored in the control module memory.
Each position sensor must be calibrated in the following positions.
Convertible top position sensor:
- convertible top open.
- convertible top closed.
Position sensor for the rear locking arm:
- convertible top cover closed and the rear locking arms in the resting position (i.e. the convertible top is in the storage compartment).
- convertible top cover closed.
- convertible top cover closed and the rear locking arms in position to grip the hooks in the tension frames.
- convertible top cover closed and the rear locking arms in position to fold out the convertible top via the tension frame.

Calibration routine (see step 4 for VST screens)
Note!
Before calibration, run the convertible top to stored position.
Note!
The convertible top must always be run to the end of each step (mechanical stop). The VST memory cassette is programmed to take the steps to the right position.
To avoid faulty convertible top positions being stored by mistake, it is important to proceed as follows:
- connect the Volvo Scan Tool (VST) to the data link connector (DLC).
- ignition on.
- open cover locks.
- lift up the coverplate by hand.
- lower the tension bow latch down on the convertible top. The position must be between 40 and 64.
- lower the rear locking arms to the marking on the bow. The objective is to push down the top assembly with the rubber stops on the bottom of the rear cover latch arms to prevent noise or rattling in storage position.
- remember or write down the position.
- save the position (YES) or press (NO) to proceed to the next or (EXIT) to cancel the calibration
- lay down the coverplate by hand.
- open coverplate completely. The positions must be between 190-245.
- Remember or write down the position.
- save the position (YES) or: press (NO) to proceed to the next or (EXIT) to cancel the calibration.
- draw the convertible top completely down. The positions must be between 209239.
- remember or write down the position.
- save the position (YES) or: press (NO) to proceed to the next or (EXIT) to cancel the calibration.
- open the convertible top completely. The positions must be between 53-72.
- remember or write down the position.
- save the position (YES) or: press (NO) to proceed to the next or (EXIT) to cancel the calibration.
- lock the convertible top into place.
- close the convertible top cover.
- lock the convertible top cover.
- adjust the rear locking arms so that they are exactly under the convertible top cover (catch position 58-138).
Note!
It is important to know what happens when testing. Damage can occur i.e. motor for lock arm is run without the coverplate being open with the result that the coverplate cracks (worst case scenario).
- remember or write down the position.
- save the position (YES) or: press (NO) to proceed to the next or (EXIT) to cancel the calibration.
- check that the tension frame lies close to the compartment cover by folding double 4 paper strips and placing them as shown.
- draw back the tension frame.
- tension the convertible top by operating the rear locking arms. The positions must be between 40-1O1.
- pull each paper strip and check that they hold filmly in place, but are not so tight that they tear.
Hint: Tape the end of the paper.
- pull the paper free. The force should be 8-15 Nm.
- remember or write down the position.
- save the position (YES) or: press (NO) to proceed to the next or (EXIT) to cancel the calibration.
- ignition off.
- ignition on.
- wait.
- convertible top calibration is complete. Test!
During the test run, you may notice that the positions at the end of each step differ from the calibrated values. If there is a difference between the values this is no problem.
Additional information
If any of the paper strips come out too easily, adjust as described in:
- adjustment of rear lock arms, see VADIS Replacing the locking arms and locks
- replacement, adjustment and emergency opening of compartment cover, see VADIS Replacing, adjusting and emergency opening of the cover.
- adjustment of complete soft top unit, see VADIS Replacing and adjusting the soft-top unit.

VST Convertible Top Calibration
Operate convertible top to a stored position using button on the dash. If not possible, use VST manual activation to carefully maneuver the top to stored position.
Connect the VST to the Data Link Connector.
Turn the ignition switch to position II (on).
Turn on the VST.
Go to C70 menu. Then go to Group 8 Body. Then scroll down to CCU. Wait until communication is established.
Scroll down to CAB. Press ENTER.

Note!
If only one potentiometer value needs to be calibrated, the ENTIRE sequence still must be followed. However, use the NO key for the values that are OK, and skip directly to the needed calibration step.
