Motor and potentiometer in backrest, replace

Special tools:

Preparations

Caution! Install the transport safety device for the SIPS Airbag. See Replacing seat assembly Replacing Seat Assembly.


Removing




Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio is installed.
Remove:
- Battery negative lead.
- Seat from the car in accordance with Replacing seat assembly Replacing Seat Assembly
- Seat upholstery. See Backrest upholstery, replacement Backrest Upholstery, Replacement.
- Impact protection.





- Undo screw (A) securing the motor's lower mounting and twist out motor.

Caution! Take care not to damage the SIPS airbag ignition cable.





- Lift motor over in front of the SIPS ignition cable.
- Undo screws (B and C) from the upper mounting (D) which secures the cable.
- Remove the mounting (D) and cable.

- Unscrew and remove the lower mounting.
- Remove the potentiometer.
To remove the motor continue as follows:




- Disconnect the gray 14-pin connector from the control module
- Cut off the four cable clamps holding the cable to the motor.
- Pull cable out and remove motor.
- Mark up the pin positions in the gray 14-pin connector B.
- Press out the pin for the motor from the connector. Use terminal removal tool 951 2631 Terminal removal tool 951 2631 Terminal Removal Tool.
- Pull the motor cables backward through the cable harness.

Reinstalling
Reinstall in reverse order.
- Attach the cable as earlier using four cable clamps.
- Leave slack to off-load the cable at the backrest angle (especially import on the right seat which can be folded forward).
- When installing the impact protection: check that the impact protection is not contacting the SIPS airbag's gas generator.

SIPS airbag, removing the safety device
Remove the transport safety device from the sensor module and return it to its storage place on the inside of the control panel.
