Replacement of Complete Hood (Convertible Top)
REPLACING THE CONVERTIBLE TOP UNITNote: The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Note: Before starting work, see Preparations before work.
Preparatory work
Open the trunk lid and block the lock mechanism. Set the convertible top to the position illustrated.
Hint: Pull the trunk lid a little when folding the convertible top up to prevent the convertible top catching in the cover.
Move the side windows to their lowest position.
Removing the convertible top unit assembly
Remove:
- the rear seat.
- the side panels.
- the front lower mounting for the seat belt.
- the screws, 5 on each side, for the run-off protection/weatherstrip against the rear side windows.
Note: Do not damage or scratch the rear side windows.
Ignition off.
Make a note of the anti-theft radio code.
Remove the battery lead. See Note when disconnecting/connecting the battery lead. Service and Repair
Remove:
- the cargo compartment carpet/floor.
- the sill trim panel.
- the center panel for the convertible top box.
- the right-hand side panel.
- the 3 screws for the convertible top control module.
Lower the bracket.
Remove:
- the 2 connectors at the control module (1).
- the 2 connectors and the cable holder (2).
- the 1 cable holder (3).
- the 2 clip holders (4).
Note: Save the cable holder (3).
Disconnect the cable harness from the convertible top box and remove the clips.
Note: Make a note of how the cable harness is routed.
Remove the 12 screws for the motor plate. Move the motor plate to one side.
Remove the 2 connectors.
Route the cable harness out towards the cargo compartment.
Remove:
- the tie strap for the cable harness for the convertible top.
- the 24 mountings for the tie strap.
Expose the cable harness (1).
Disconnect the drive cable on one side at a time.
Fold the cable harness over the motor plate.
Caution: Remove one drive cable at a time.
Mark up the position of the drive cable.
Pull the drive cable straight out.
Fold the cable harness back over the motor plate.
Reinstall the drive cable.
Carry out the same operation on the other side.
Fold up the cable harness in front of the tensioner rib.
Remove:
- the 2 outer screws (1).
- the inner screw (2) on each side, as illustrated.
Note: The screwed joint may have shims between the body and the mounting for the convertible top.
Note: the number of shims on each side.
Hint: This operation is easier with two people.
Carefully lift up the convertible top unit.
Note: Ensure that the convertible top unit is completely free when lifting.
Installing the convertible top unit assembly
Note: For tightening torques, see Tightening torque.
Install the convertible top unit.
Caution: Take care when lifting the convertible top unit into the convertible top box. The fabric at the tensioner rib can be damaged.
Note: The weatherstrip at the front edge of the convertible top box must be installed.
Guide the convertible top unit in with the locating pins.
Install:
- any shims according as noted previously.
- the 3 M8 screws. Tighten.
Remove the tie straps on both sides of the gas strut and for the cable harness on the right-hand side.
Lift up the convertible top to the starting position.
Install:
- the gas strut on the convertible top. Tape the link rod to the body.
- the cable harness in the convertible top box using 24 clips.
- all the connectors.
Secure any loose cables using tie straps. Pull out a part of the cable harness in the cargo compartment for the control module for the convertible top and secure with clips.
Install:
- the 2 connectors behind the engine plate.
- the engine plate with 12 screws.
- the 4 connectors for the control module.
Transfer:
- the 1 cable holder from the replaced cable harness.
- the 1 saved cable holder.
Install:
- the bracket for the control module.
- 3 M6 nuts. Tighten.
- the side panel on the right-hand side.
- the center panel for the convertible top box.
- the sill trim panel.
- the cargo compartment carpet/floor.
