Replacing the textile roof

Replacing the textile headlining
Removing the textile headlining, rear section
The convertible top position illustrated applies for all operations.
Caution! Always begin with the front section when installing the textile headlining.
Remove:
- 11 screws for the tension bow
- 1 screw on both the left and right hand sides of the tension bow.
Note! Be careful when removing the textile. It may be bonded to the ribs.
Remove 1 screw for the elastic above the window.
Open the zip around the window. Remove the textile.
Removing textile headlining, side section
Open the three press studs on the right and left-hand sides.
Alternatively, remove the 3 screws on the left and right-hand sides.
From chassis no. 1100, the headlining has screwed joints.
The following applies from chassis no. 1100:
Remove the mounting for the mechanical cable.
Insert one hand and slacken off the upper screw, followed by the inner lower screw and finally the outer lower screw.
Remove the 2 screws for the elastic.
The following applies from model year 1999:
Remove the 3 screws for the elastic.
Disconnect the Velcro strips around the ribs.
Remove the tie back for the rib from the right and left-hand sides.
Removing textile headlining, center section
Remove the tie backs for the ribs.
Remove the rods and straps.
Carefully draw the textile backwards.
Removing textile headlining, front section
Remove:
- the cover for the front lock motor in the convertible top
- the 8 screws holding the textile to the edge protector.
Carefully draw the textile backwards.
Installing textile headlining
When installing textile, begin with the front section and finish with the rear section according to the procedures above.
Note! The difference when installing is that 11 screws for the tension bow and the front locking motor cover in the convertible top are installed last.
Use screws if the press studs do not hold the headlining in place.
From chassis number 1100, the headlining has screwed joints.
Use tape, P/N 1161590 to secure the headlining.
Lift at the inside of the weatherstrip. Drill a 3.5 mm hole in the rib as illustrated.
Cut the reinforcement. Enlarge the hole (5 mm) as illustrated. Screw the textile into place.
Replacing outer convertible top textile
Removing outer convertible top textile, front section
Convertible top position 3 applies for all operations.
Remove the 11 screws holding the textile to the edge protector and trim.
Carefully draw the textile backwards.
Remove 1 screw for the wire mounting which is on the edging wire. See Replacing the wires Replacing the Wires.
Removing the outer convertible top textile, center section
Remove:
- the 6 screws for the brackets on the center roof arch
- the bonded textile from the ribs.
Note! Be careful when removing the textile from the ribs. The textile is bonded and may rip.
Remove the clip holding the edging wire. Release the wire.
Removing the outer convertible top textile, side section
Remove the weatherstrip at the rear side window C post.
Remove 1 screw and 2 nuts and the sliding washers.
Remove the 2 screws for the strap and wire.
Removing the outer convertible top textile, rear section
Remove:
- the 17 screws at the rear edge of the tension bow
- the 2 connectors for the rear windshield heater
- the textile from the roof.
Installing outer convertible top textile
Move the convertible top to the position illustrated, but with the tension bow almost completely retracted.
Hint: For cars up to 1998 inclusive, use the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) to position the convertible top in the correct position.
For cars from 1999 inclusive onwards, use VIDA car communication.
Hint: Installation of the textile outer roof can be made easier by wetting the textile (outer side).
Caution! Mark the center of all the roof ribs and cross members when installing a new textile outer convertible top. Also mark the center of the textile outer convertible top.
Lay the outer layer of the textile over the roof arches. Secure the textile to the cross members and tension bows using standard mounting screws or use 3 locking pliers at each position.
Note! Protect the textile from damage if using locking pliers.
Install:
- the edging wire with 1 screw on both the left and right-hand sides
- 1 clip on the edging wire on the left and right-hand sides.
Installing outer convertible top textile, side section
Install 1 screw and 2 nuts and the sliding washers.
Install:
- the 2 screws for the strap and wire
- the weatherstrip for the rear side window C post, see Replacing weatherstrips Service and Repair.
Secure the textile on the roof arches. Use tape, P/N 1161590.
Installing outer convertible top textile, center section
Mark out the positions for the mounting brackets on the center roof arch on the textile.
Install the 6 screws for the mounting brackets.
When only installing the outer convertible top textile, proceed to Installing outer convertible top textile, front section.
If a new textile headlining is to be installed, bond it to the front and rear side members. Install the textile headlining according to Replacing the textile headlining.
Do not screw the textile headlining into place in the tension bow.
Installing outer convertible top textile, front section
Install the 11 screws holding the textile to the edge protector and molding at the front cross member.
If locking pliers have been used, remove them.
Installing outer convertible top textile, rear section
Install the 17 screws for the textile outer layer in the tension bow.
If locking pliers have been used, remove them.
