Replacing the convertible top fabric (generation 2)
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and / or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Note! Before starting work, see Preparations before work Preparations Before Work. To identify the serial number of the convertible system, see Identifying the serial number of the convertible system Application and ID.
This method applies to convertible top numbers:
- 17937 (black)
- 17532 (beige)
- 18011 (blue).
Note! Open the trunk lid in order to carry out manual operation later.
Replacing the textile headlining
Removing the textile headlining, rear section
Set the convertible top to the position illustrated.
Remove:
- the 19 screws for the tensioner rib
- the screws, 1 on each side, on the left and right-hand sides of the tensioner rib.
Open the zip fastener around the window and carefully remove the headlining from the tape.
Move the textile to one side.
Removing the textile headlining, side section
Remove:
- the 2 screws for the elastic strap
- the 2 outer screws.
Disconnect the Velcro strips around the ribs.
Note! The end of the Velcro strip must meet the white marking on the strap.
Removing textile headlining, center section
Remove:
- the screws
- the plastic rails
- the elastic straps
- the clamps
- the rivets. Use a 6 mm drill bit
- plastic guide.
Removing textile headlining, front section
Remove:
- the cover for the front lock motor in the convertible top
- the 2 catches.
Fold around the headlining textile over the convertible top fabric, as illustrated.
Remove:
- the screws holding the textile with the edge molding, as illustrated
- the inner skin.
Installing textile headlining, front section
Start with the front part when installing the textile.
End with the rear section according to the procedures above and below.
Note! The difference when installing is that the 21 screws for the tensioner rib and the cover for the front lock motor in the convertible top are installed last.
Use tape, P/N 116 1590, to secure at the tensioner rib.
Fold the headlining textile over the convertible top fabric.
Install:
- the screws for the textile with the edge molding
- the 2 elastic straps
- the plastic rails
- the clamps
- the screws
- pop rivets.
Installing the textile headlining, side section
Install:
- the Velcro straps around the ribs
- the 2 outer screws
- the 2 screws for the elastic strap.
Installing the textile headlining, rear section
Close the zip fastener around the window. Remember to order a zip fastener catch, see VIDA Replacement parts information.
Press the headlining against the tape.
Install:
- the screws, 1 on each side, on the left and right-hand sides of the tensioner rib
- the 19 screws for the tensioner rib.
Replacing the convertible top fabric
Removing the convertible top fabric, front section
Set the convertible top to the position illustrated.
Remove the 11 screws holding the textile to the edge protector and trim.
Carefully draw the textile backwards.
Remove the 1 screw for the cable mounting located on the corner cable. See Replacing the wires Replacing the Wires.
Remove the front convertible top seal.
Mark up the position of the nuts and note the number of shims.
Remove the bonded convertible top fabric (the flags) from the ribs.
Caution! Be careful when removing the fabric from the ribs. The fabric is bonded and may rip.
Remove the clip holding the corner cable.
Release the cable.
Removing the convertible top fabric, side section
Remove the weatherstrip. See Replacing weatherstrips Service and Repair.
Note! Cover the underlying panels and the hinge mechanism so that no swarf can gets in.
Remove:
- the 1 screw with the 1 nut and the slide washers
- the 1 screw for the strap.
Removing the convertible top fabric, rear section
Disconnect the 2 connectors for the rear windshield heater.
Hint: Press the connector catch located inside the heat-shrink tubing to facilitate removal.
Remove the 1 screw for the elastic strap in the center.
Note! Use a marker pen to mark out the position of the fabric tie back (the flags) on the convertible top ribs at the outer edges of the flags. (Note that this procedure is carried out from inside the car. The aim is to make it easier to install the outer roof panel again.)
Detach the bonded tie backs from the convertible top ribs.
Remove the outer roof panel.
Installing the convertible top fabric
Secure the front edge of the convertible top fabric using approximately half the screws evenly distributed.
Thread the rear part of the convertible top over the tensioner rib.
Install the weatherstrip on the left and right-hand sides. See Replacing weatherstrips Service and Repair.
Secure the rear edge using approximately half the screws evenly distributed.
Close the convertible top using the Volvo Scan Tool (VST).
Caution! Take care when controlling the convertible top with VST at this stage due to the loose components in the convertible top.
Open the front edge of the convertible top approximately 115 mm.
Use a wrench for mechanical control. See Emergency operation Emergency Operation , or use VST.
Caution! It is particularly important that the convertible top is in this position. Otherwise the convertible top fabric will not be correctly tensioned when closed.
Note! Center the convertible top according to previous markings on the convertible top ribs.
Caution! Center the end of the adhesive surface (A) with the middle of the convertible top rib (2) and bond the flag at the front of the car.
Close the convertible top.
Bond flag (1) and then flag (3).
Tighten the remaining screws at the front edge of the convertible top.
Install:
- the corner cable at the front edge with the screws, 1 on each side, to the left and right-hand sides
- the 2 screws for the elastic strap.
Install 1 clip for the corner cable on the left and the right-hand sides.
Bond the side flags.
Install the front convertible top weatherstrip. See Replacing weatherstrips Service and Repair.
Install:
- the 1 screw for the strap. Tighten
- the 1 screw with the 1 nut and the slide washers.
Note! Do not tighten the screwed joint too hard. The joint should be able to run easily in the groove.
Install the headlining according to the section for installing textile headlining above.
Calibrate the system. See Programming and calibrating the convertible system Programming and Relearning.
