Preparations

Clean and degrease the surface.
Carefully remove dirt, wax, sweat and sanding water residue etc.
Silicon is removed with thinner or special silicon remover for sheet panel, galvanized sheet or aluminum.

Note! If the panel is not cleaned before applying the primer, blistering or corrosion can occur.

Sand the damaged area down to the actual metal.

Use a slow-rotation sanding machine and dry sandpaper P 80-120.

Remove the rust by blasting

Use blasting equipment to remove the rust, especially in hollows and recesses. The blasting process and equipment are described in more detail, see Sand-Blasting Sand-Blasting.

Sand the surrounding area.

Sand down the old paint layer with P 320-400 sand paper. Sand down the paint edges to get an even transition from the sanded metal to the surrounding coat of paint.

Blow the surface clean

Blow the whole car with clean, dry air (even for smaller repairs) in order to remove any excess sanding dust, particles and water.

Apply masking tape to the surface.

Apply masking tape to the edges of the area to be painted. For a more detailed description of this process, see Masking Masking.

Dry off the surface.

Clean and dry the surface with cleaning agent.
Dust and sanding residue should be removed and the area should be properly dry before starting to paint.

Note! Do not use drying cloths which fluff or contain nylon.

Do not touch sanded and degreased areas with your hands. Hand sweat contains salt which can result in blistering in the end result.
